Chaos Engine online !!!!!

From Pczone.co.uk

BITMAP'S CHAOS ENGINE GOING ONLINE!

The veteran developer partners with Nicely Crafted Entertainment to seek out new online ventures

15:58 UK developers The Bitmap Brothers and Nicely Crafted Entertainment (responsible for MMORTS Time of Defiance) have announced that they've joined forces to work together "on a number of exciting new products". Part of this team-up will involve the creation of an online version of Bitmap's classic 16-bit blaster Chaos Engine.
Under the partnership, The Bitmap Brothers and Nicely Crafted Entertainment (NiCE) will share technology and intellectual properties, and as well as re-inventing Chaos Engine in online form will explore "new genres for MMOG entertainment".

The developers will also work together to create an online version of The Bitmap Bros. World War II strategy title Frontline Command. Which is odd, because we thought it was online already. Although not "massively".

Speaking about the team-up, The Bitmap Brothers' managing director Mike Montgomery commented: "This is an exciting time for us and we're looking forward to this new venture hugely. Toby Simpson and his team are a great bunch, and between us we aim to create some stunning titles."

"I am looking forward to applying some of Bitmap's creative magic to a new genre," he said.

NiCE's managing director Toby Simpson also gave some words on the partnership: "Our revolutionary scalable AliceServer technology married with The Bitmap Brothers' product designs and development heritage will allow us to create MMOG titles that we'd all only previously dreamt of."

Interesting eh ??

Why would a 3D rendition of Chaos Engine "rock"?

Wouldn't a 2D, online multiplayer game be good, if not better, than a 3D rendition? Would the 3D depiction do any justice to the original's gameplay? Can the original gameplay be retained in the swap to 3D?
Have you thought of all these questions?

The reason I think it would "rock" is because as a genre FPS isnt bad in itself (IMO) its just been done to death with little or no originality. I think a 3D CE would add a new angle to this tired old genre. I also always imagined playing the game in 3D, and to me it could play really well and look really good.

I agree Id also be happy with a remake of CE as it is but online, but Ive always wanted to see it in 3D as well.
As for the 2D versions gameplay being retained, it would be a different game of course and the only similarity being the subject but if done right it could play very well IMO.

PLEASE lets not get into 2D Vs 3D

I see that Akira had the same doubts as myself as I read the announcement. I don't want to sound too pessimistic, but after all I see a '3D Multiplayer Online' approach of CE with mixed emotions. Sounds like just another hype for me - nevertheless I hope I'm wrong.

If they manage to release A 2D (no 3D FFS) game (that is available in floppies or CD) that can be played through the internet, it would be one of the greatest games ever. Imagine a deathmatch with 16 players.... MAYHEM!

Why would you want it on floppies?

Why does it have to be so huge that it spawns across many CDs?

1 CD would be fine. Floppies aren't good enough for high-res graphics and quality sound.

Chaos Engine came on a couple of floppies, and a similar game with online capabilities wouldn't be bad, IMO.

Yeah! Tell them Akira! Can't understand why a game should be huge to be good. What's wrong with Amiga chaos engine? Solid graphics, cool sound, excellent gameplay! If I had this mutliplayer, it would only be for good...
