Surf Squirrel, WB3.1.4 Woes
Hi all,
I've been trying to install a Surf Squirrel and CD Rom for ages now, with no luck; I actually think the Squirrel might be broken, but cannot be sure at the moment. I couldn't get the drivers to install properly at first- it kept asking for the Master Disk; I got round this by downloading the dms, copying it onto my HD in WinUAE and then dragging onto the desktop when installing. But the last couple of attempts have left my HD not booting at all, requiring a format/reinstall! It does not pick up the CD drive at the end of installation, nor does it show anything in IDEFix or Prepcard. The PCMCIA slot is functional (it works with my CF card). Are there any known issues/workarounds with WB3.1.4? Could I manually copy files so I know what to undo if it borks again? TIA for any advice. |

Hi Mafoo, the best thing would have been to go into Early Startup and boot with no Startup-Sequence so you could remove the offending line(s). There was certainly no need for a format and reinstall.

Is there any chance to test it with another Amiga?

Not at the moment- I might try making a boot floppy, see if that works.
I did try editing the startup sequence, masking out all the Squirrel references, but it still hung! |

When you say not booting, do you mean it stats to boot then just stops? Once the driver has started it will be scanning for connected drives which can take a while before booting resumes.
I do remember the Squirrel being a tight fit and required a little force before it went in all the way when it was new and did feel like you are about to break it. |

I’ll try a bit more force, but I think it was in ok. Should prepcard and IDEFix pick it up without any other software being installed?

No. they are not related.
I tested the Install disk in UAE as it has Surf Squirrel as an scsi option although it doesn't seem to work and the driver/scsimounter just gets stuck scanning the scsi bus. However, it also didn't ask about setting up the cd rom. It installs the mountlist in storage/dosdrivers as CD0 which you can move to devs/dosdrivers to auto mount it. It is also set up with the default unit number of 3. Other points of interest are that if you boot the disk, it will attempt to use loadmodule to install its drivers so that you can boot of external hds after a reset. It does not work with kick3.0. Although again, it appears to be getting stuck at scanning the scsi bus in the emulator. (Just a cdrom is attached to the squirrel as unit 3) Dont just copy all files off the disk over to your hd as it will overwrite your startup script and install lots of old command versions. When using the installer, just say no when it asks to do that. Last edited by Mad-Matt; 03 June 2020 at 21:45. |

When I’ve been trying to get things working, The unit has got warm to touch, so I’m presuming it’s connected ok.
I’m really beginning to think the thing is knackered. Might need to get another A1200 to try it with lol |

Do you have any memory expansion in your A600/A1200?
Are you booting with the PCMCIA card inserted? If you go to the Early Boot menu, what do you see listed in the boot options? I have an issue with my A1200 rev 2B when in 8MB mode (not 4MB mode) when any PCMCIA card is in situ during boot, CF0 and DH0 is disabled - the only device available is DF0. |

Have you checked that another PCMCIA card works? I've had issues with a Squirrel device before, the PCMCIA connector has a nasty habit of bending the pins in the Amiga's PCMCIA port if it's not inserted carefully.

I thought I'd have a look at the PCMCIA slot, even though a CF card had been working- one of the pins was bent!
I've managed to straighten it (miraculously without breaking it off), but when I tried to install the squirrel software, it hung when booting from HD again! Booting into WB from floppy, I deleted libs and devices and it boots up again. Could it be that there is some conflict within some of the files when booting? I chose to leave more recent versions of files rather than replacing with older versions when installing. I have a 1260 installed, but this should not cause conflict with PCMCIA- plus the CF has worked with this installed. |

Does the HD start booting? The Squirrel will only get activated once a driver tries to access it. Maybe a cd0 driver in devsosdrivers ? Once the driver is called the squirrel will halt the Amiga until it has finished scanning the scsi bus and mounted the drive. Do you have Terminator connected to the last drive? if not, it may never finished scanning and keep the amiga in a halted state.

Another noob trying to get old hardware going.
Hi all, yes I'm another noob trying to get my SurfSquirrel working with my Amiga 1200.
I recently dug out my Grimey old A1200 with Blizzard 060 Accelerator card out of the cupboard. I had the caps replaced, ordered a m.2 card with what I'm informed it OS4.9 Workbench, plugged in some new OS 3.2 kickstart roms and started playing with my new faster and better featured operating system. Then the trouble started. I tried to install the drivers for my surf squirrel being careful to not install older versions of files than what is already installed. But, The computer won't boot if any of the lines (blocked by semicolons) are enabled. Below, is a copy of my startup sequence and user startup. ;OS49 Startup-Sequence ;-------------------------- ;OS49 ;Start OS3.9 Checks ;IF EXISTS C:SquirrelSCSI ; C:SquirrelSCSI ;EndIF Set SCSIUpdate 1 IF EXISTS C:IDEFix C:IDEFix Set SCSIUpdate 0 EndIF IF EXISTS SYS:Expansion/XSurfIDE Set SCSIUpdate 0 EndIF IF EXISTS SYS:Prefs/Env-Archive/NOSCSIUPDATE Set SCSIUpdate 0 EndIf IF $SCSIUpdate EQ 1 ; C:SquirrelSCSI C:SetPatch NOROMUPDATE QUIET ELSE C:SetPatch SKIPROMUPDATES "scsi.device" QUIET EndIF Unset SCSIUpdate ;End OS3.9 Checks C:GetMouseInput LOCAL IF $MouseInput EQ 1 Unset MouseInput C:Assign >NIL: ENV: RAM: C:Assign >NIL: T: RAM: C:Execute S:Maxmem-Sequence EndCLI >NIL: EndIF IF $MouseInput EQ 2 Unset MouseInput C:Execute S:Bootmenu-Sequence EndCLI >NIL: EndIF Unset MouseInput IF EXISTS C:StackAttack C:StackAttack EndIF C:Version >NIL: FailAt 21 IF EXISTS SYS:WBstartupD C:Rename >NIL: SYS:WBStartup SYS:WBStartupM C:Rename >NIL: SYS:WBStartupD SYS:WBStartup EndIF Resident >NIL: C:IconX PURE Resident >NIL: C:WBRun PURE Resident >NIL: C:Assign PURE Resident >NIL: C:Execute PURE Resident >NIL: C:SetEnv PURE REPLACE IF EXISTS L:env-handler C:MakeDir RAM:T RAM:Clipboards L:env-handler ELSE C:MakeDir RAM:T RAM:Clipboards RAM:ENV RAM:ENV/Sys C:Copy >NIL: ENVARC: RAM:ENV ALL NOREQ Assign >NIL: ENV: RAM:ENV EndIF IF EXISTS C:PatchRAM C:PatchRAM EndIF IF EXISTS C:TagLiFE C:TagLiFE EndIF Assign >NIL: T: RAM:T Assign >NIL: CLIPS: RAM:Clipboards Assign >NIL: REXX: S: Assign >NIL: PRINTERS: DEVS:Printers Assign >NIL: KEYMAPS: DEVS:Keymaps Assign >NIL: LOCALE: SYS:Locale Assign >NIL: LIBS: SYS:Classes ADD Assign >NIL: HELP: LOCALE:Help DEFER IF EXISTS C:BlazeWCP C:BlazeWCP EndIF IF EXISTS SYS:System/FBlit/FBlit SYS:System/FBlit/FBlit SYS:System/FBlit/FText EndIF BindDrivers C:Mount >NIL: DEVSOSDrivers/~(#?.info) C:LoadMonDrvs SetEnv Language "english" SetEnv Workbench $Workbench SetEnv Kickstart $Kickstart UnSet Workbench UnSet Kickstart IF EXISTS C:CyberBugFix C:CyberBugFix EndIF IF EXISTS C:IconBeFast C User Startup ;OS49 User-Startup ;---------------------- ;OS49 IF EXISTS C:AntiClick C:AntiClick EndIF Execute S:Assign-Startup Assign >NIL: LAUNCH: SYS:System/BMenu/Files Assign >NIL: VMEM: SYS:T Assign >NIL: AWEB_APL: SYS:Internet/AWeb_APL C:Copy >NIL: S:Ram.info RAMisk.info Run >NIL C:RamSnap ;BEGIN MUI IF EXISTS SYS:System/MUI Assign >NIL: MUI: SYS:System/MUI IF EXISTS MUI:Libs Assign >NIL: ADD LIBS: MUI:Libs EndIF IF EXISTS MUI:Locale Assign >NIL: ADD LOCALE: MUI:Locale EndIF C:Version >NIL: exec.library 39 IF NOT WARN IF EXISTS MUIocs IF EXISTS HELP:dummy EndIF Assign >NIL: ADD HELP: MUIocs EndIF EndIF EndIF ;END MUI C:xfdPatch >NIL: Run >NIL: C:XpkMasterPrefs IF EXISTS C:BorderBlank C:BorderBlank EndIF ;BEGIN SquirrelSCSI ;SquirrelSCSI >NIL: MOUNT ;END SquirrelSCSI ;BEGIN SCSIMounter ;Path "SYS:SquirrelSCSI/SCSIMounter" ADD ;END SCSIMounter If anyone could tell me what goes where and what I need to do to fix the files that are installed, I would be forever greatfull. Also, The scsi cdrom I have is an 8x not sure of the brand but it has it's own scsi terminator on a jumper on the back of the cd rom. And it is set as item 1 on the list. |

As an example I tried installing the SCSI Squirrel software with a Archos a overdrive software and the 2 don’t play nice. You could try commenting out the IDEFIX lines in your startup-sequence just in-case by putting a semi-colon in front of each line then rebooting. It also pays having an 060 accelerator to make sure you have the 060 libraries installed. Again I’m guessing this OS4.9? Doesn’t make any accommodation for accelerators? I.e it’s not loading up 68060 libraries form Libs? Ideally you need to test the squirrel with either a fresh OS install on someth8ng and just installing the drivers to make sure the surf squirrel works. Also how certain are you about the termination on the drive? Had a SCSI drive that had a bad termination resistor before now. |
