Share internet with A1200T mediator and WinXP

Lo all, I have my A1200T connected to my Win XP PC via a 10/100 ethernet card. I use MiamiDX (registered) and can run AmiFTP to share files.

What I really cant get working though is Internet sharing on my Amiga with my PC internet connection.

Ibrowse and Aweb both report no DNS host???

How do I get my Amiga <> PC network to hook upto my ADSL connection (PIPEX nonstatic IP address)?

Thanks in advance.....

heys DDNI,

okies (double checking) are you running XP-Pro ?.

if so.

Amiga side,

gateway ip = ip address of XP machine (most likely 192.168.0.1)
ip address = xp xxx, xxx, xxx, any number (probly 192.168.0.10)
subnet mask = xp machine ( probly 255.255.255.0 )

truth is you prolly have it setup this way and so please ignore my rambles

get a good router and run a DHCP service much more effcient ))

I always install some easy to use proxy on the pc. now i use CCProxy, free for 3 users.

Configure CCproxy and check all ports etc. Then set up the amiga and use the proxy adress..

ok thanks guys. I have the PC IP addresses set as suggested by Zetro. This allows me to use amiFTP toPC servu etc. Doesnt work with internet though. The proxy idea sounds good, but what extra settings do I need to make in MiamiDX to get it to work?

I have it running for my A1200PPC, AOne, A4000/060 and A600

Just activate Internet Connection Sharing for your PC Broadband Connection, and use the following settings on your Amiga ....

IP : your choice but in PC IP Range
Subnet : same as PC
Gateway : your PCs IP
DNS : your PCs IP, if that won´t work, use google to find the DNS Server of your provider !

Why on earth.. :-D

Just say ipconfig /all in your pc's command prompt and it will show you what DNS servers it is using.

My ADSL modem is USB.
I have one network card in my PC connected to a network card on the Amiga.

I have all the correct IPs and DNS servers configured.
The problem I have is understanding MiamiDX settings properly. If anyone can help me get miami to stop saying no DNS server found and/or no route to host, then I would bo ok....

Heys DDNI, you could try pointing the DNS server IP to the IP of the amiga... see how that goes...

Can you ping or traceroute to the DNS server IP address (or any other non local IP address) from the Amiga side?

yepo, thats right my bad completely, I meant set the DNS on the amiga side as the IP of the PC (not amiga) and see if that goes.. tis ben a long time since i used internet connection sharing... it should make a disk for you, on that disk is the config for the connecting machines, give that an overview too

btw Routers RULE, they reduce system overhead (compared to usb) connect multiple machines and or networks and a half decent one is dirt cheap at arround £50 on dabs gives you a hardware firewall on top of routing, logging and if you get the right ones they even have access controll

ICS has a DHCP server built in so basically you don't even need any kind of config floppies etc.. The OP also said he has Miami, which works with DHCP.

As long as ICS is turned on and configured to use the correct interface as the internal network, the PC will automatically configure the internal interface to use 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0 (you can't even change it manually when ICS is running) and will have DNS forwarding + a DHCP server running.

There is a problem with DHCP/BootP and Miami/more-recent-software/devices.

Miami uses Bootp, not DHCP. A DHCP server *should* respond to BootP requests, but not all of them do (either that or Miami doesn't understand the response). One day I will stick a sniffer on the network and capture the request process and see which side is failing.

The next issue is whether the PC ICS is getting the correct IP addressing information for its own DHCP use. By this, ICS needs to know the DNS server address (your ISP DNS server) Without this, the DHCP component is not correctly configured, so the DHCP information it sends to clients (ie, your Amiga, any other machine, and possibly even itself) is incomplete/inaccurate.

ICS is notorious for getting it wrong; for example you have a router with an IP of 192.168.0.1, and ICS tries to assign the bridged connection (the two network interfaces on the host PC) with that address... DOH! It also has a problem in that once configured, even Admin account can be locked out from the properties page... which is pretty crap. It also has a habit of enabling the Windows firewall...

USB broadband interfaces are shiite. Simple as. Its a naff solution even for connecting one device, let alone trying to share.

The best solution is a router. Simple as. A real ethernet solution, not a USB router...

I suggest that you hard-configure the Amiga, with an IP address in the same range as the Windows box, same subnet, and the ISP's DNS server address. Then ping the PC, then the DNS server, and post results.

A better solution might be Wingate, and not ICS... But try the above and post results.

Do you use a router ?

I have mediator setup to go through my wireless router on a wired connection. If you have a router I can tell you how to do it that way, if not I would imagine you would want to:

Setup a class C IP on the Miggy with a gateway on the base IP ergo.

IP Address 192.168.8.127 for the miggy
Gateway 192.168.8.1 ( address of PC )
Netmask 255.255.255.0
Set DNS address on miggy to PC 1st ethernet address I.E 192.168.8.1
set gateway address of 1st card on PC to ip address of 2nd card 192.168.7.1
set gateway of 2nd card to IP address of modem or router. I.E 192.168.6.1

Im not sure but an easier way maybe to bridge eth0 and eth1 on the PC its been a wee while since I used that sort of methodology and a router REALY helps.

You should be able to ping one step at a time, the point at which it falls over will be the point you need to look at.

Looks messy tho - Router is much tidier.

One other thing check the IP Address of the USB connection of your modem

Your 2nd NIC and router are on different IP networks...
@DDNIDo the followingOpen a command pompt on the PC and type ipconfig /all and post herealso post the IP settings in Miami - IP address, subnet mask, and DNS (aka gateway). These should be hardcoded, and NOT BootP.Lets start from basics.

Under Miami

Something I forgot to mention, in order to resolve DNS under Miami I had to set the DNS server address's to those of my ISP.
