Two Workbench Questions...

1) Is it possible to have an animated background of the Workbench, where wallpaper would normally be? Like some kind of cool, CPU-wasting effect or something?

2) Are there any tools to allow keyboard-shortcut launching of apps? Frankly I like to use the mouse as little as possible, and it would be nice to be able to bring up CLI, DOpus, etc with a few combined keystrokes.

Thanks!

Don't know about your first one.

But your second, holding down the command (A) keys and using your keyboard arrows will move your cursor, the Command key plus Right ALT will right click, left ALT will left click. I think so anyway. If you look at my website (in my signature) and go to keyboard shortcuts page, they are listed there.

Thanks for that -- moving the cursor/clicking isn't what I mean though. I want to be able to assign "trigger key combinations" to launch applications. Like I can do in Quicksilver on the Mac.

You mean hotkeys? I'll look into it at a more appropriate hour, dont want to wake everyone up, but im sure someone will answer your question before then, this forum is quite active. I know there are some hotkeys for the Amiga Workbenches, but i've never used them.

Toolsdaemon for example can add programs to the menus, and also assign hotkeys for them at the same time. At least 3.x also has a little program called FKey in Tools/Commodities to do the same thing. There are likely a whole bunch of other similar apps on Aminet too.

Toolsdaemon! Been a user since 1993.

Screw docks, custom menus are where it's at.

Yep, tooldaemon is great and you can use keys. Scalos also allows keyboard shortcuts but takes longer to configure.

There are probably other stand alone programs on Aminet too.

Is there a tool - If I have a Icon selected I can press the Del key and the file is deleted?

There are also filemanager like DOpus that support hotkeys. MCP has a powerful hotkey function.

DOpus can do this by hotkey.

Right for the "animated background of the Workbench" try Wblogo from aminet

This is an excellent new Wb utility designed to show off the Amiga OS to its
fullest by having an on screen animation running all the time on your Workbench
backdrop!

enjoy

There is one small program I used long time ago, its a A1200 3D logo spinning in the workbench background. It was the coolest moving background I have ever seen to date. I think it was written in AmigaE. If I find it, I will post it here, I need to dig through some cover disks.

Edit: Looks like I can't find it, maybe someone know what I'm talking about

If you're using OS3.9 you can configure this using a couple of arexx scripts:
Code:
/* Dump this in wbstartup for example, with start from arexx and no input */
address workbench
keyboard add name '"Delete"' KEY '"DEL"' CMD "rexx:wbdel.rexx"
and rexx:wbdel.rexx:
Code:
/* delete selected icons */
options results
address workbench
getattr object windows.active
activewin = result
menu window '"' || activewin || '"' invoke icons.delete

Yep, I used a similar script launched by FKey to do the same job in OS3.9. As for the first question, I remember an app that used to do some real-time raytracing of a bumpmap onto the background, using the mouse as a lightsource. It made for an awesome clock in the middle of your Workbench screen WBBump I think it was called, and wasn't an animated background per se but a borderless window sitting at the back. Good effect though!
