AVI saving from WinUAE not working and very slow

Pleae help, why does this feature not work well?

I remember I posted a similar problem a couple of months ago (see this thread).

What do you exactly mean with saving to AVI?
I tried to use some settings of the 'Output'-tab in WinUAE with a result my whole system (Win XP, AMD Athlon 1.8 Ghz, 512 Mb memory, 60 Gb harddisc) slowed down seriously.

Slow is normal, because your hard disk needs to write at least 10MB/s when saving uncompressed AVI out to disk. I get about 22fps instead of 50 when writing AVIs.

There is however, some kind of issue for me when compressing on the fly. Using the DivX codec, WinUAE sometimes locks a few minutes into the record, rendering the whole AVI unreadable. Which is why I now record uncompressed and DivX it through Virtualdub.

What is the max size of uncompressed data can be stored at once?

I think it is about 2Gb

can anyone confirm/clarify please

Have you tried the Huffy codec for your AVI captures? Also what actual drive are you capturing to, the main drive a seperate partition/drive etc.

Nope, I have never heard of Huffy, I am capturing to a seperate drive that is very fast.

I don't suppose huffy is a non-lossy format supporting low colour depths? I've been looking for such a thing. DivX isn't too good on this kind of video, it's far better suited towards movies.

Currently I'm using the animGIF format to preserve Amiga captures, which is a real headache when it's a long clip.

I'm sure Virtualdub has broken the barrier on 2GB. However UAE is more than likely using standard AVI spec when saving out, which means it will indeed have a 2gb barrier.

If huffy is the format I think it is though, this will be an ideal solution. Non-lossy compression on the fly will ensure you'll never hit 2gb, but you also won't lose quality. No doubt it'll be a low compression ratio, but that is to be expected.

You need a lot of space to use Huffy,(I understand Mjpeg to be less so, though I've never used it personally)
I thought the only 2Gb type barriers that existed occured with FAT32 limitations-as far as I know NTFS would have no such limitations.

VirtualDub does have a workaround for the 2Gb Fat32 limitation by doing a multisegmented capture,although a better example of that for Windows 98 IMO is another util called AVI_IO. Although VirtualDub makes for good editing, use it & TmpGenc for encoding to mpeg. Still, thats more to do with video capturing stuff than strictly speaking answering your WinUAE issues.

You should find out more info about the different video codecs at DVDrhelp (formerly known as VCDhelp.com).
