Help! Can't make keyboard work as game control or start game!

I downloaded the basic package on Amiga Forever and WinUAE with excitement to get back into playing Amiga games.
I don't have a joystick, but I was under the impression that I can use my keyboard instead of a joystick as a controller.
However! I have tried everything that I can find or think of to make the keyboard work as a controller, and am yet to find a solution

I can't even get past the start up screen on the majority of games as it won't acknowledge the keyboard.

Am I missing something or is this a common problem with Amiga Forever and WinUAE?

I can't help because AF overrides WinUAE settings.

Test also if mouse button does something. If it does, perhaps ports are swapped.

Check the keyboard settings in AF ... Tools ->Options->Input

You can configure lots of keyboard profiles there.

I don't think it conflicts with WinUAE since it uses WinUAE as an engine.
Someone with more knowledge of conflicts will have to address that.

You can also configure the environment when you boot it up in windowed
mode. Along the bottom of the window are input/output icons you can
switch around.
