I dislike the dismissive attitude of today's specialists "buy a new one", "not worth anything" ... they fail to realise that things built in the past were fit for purpose, not like all our equipment these days that fails to last even 5 years!

The biggest problem in the modern era is BGA without doubt, it's still too hit and miss. CRT technology of course has been a round for ages but they never really fine tuned the design, too many components and too many things to go wrong.

@Loedown I think you're right about the neckboard. Someone else told me it could also be C711; I can change that and C707 easily but what do you think about C711?
The repairman swapped boards around and I visited the workshop to see. I couldn't bring a retro device and all he had for test was a standart TV broadcast. It's apparent that I'm going to have a TV with a perfectly unscratched screen with my own board in good condition BUT I noticed the same distortions while watching at the workshop. He assured that they were related to the signal and not the hardware but how can he know if there's nothing else to test it with right? I'll be receiving the working TV tomorrow and will test it with the Amiga. He may have worked hard on this but I'm not sure the right thing was done. I find it rude to specify which components are to be replaced and make him do so even if I know he's wrong; but I'll surely call and tell him once I'm done with changing them myself. Still; I couldn't swap the boards myself and that part of the job is well done. Will post photos tomorrow. Thanks for reading. |

if i was you i would take the set to another repair man if he cant tell the distortion from a test signal fed straight to the tv.

I were busy with my UMSA for the last few days and neglected the thread. This item is also why I need this CRT running so badly I can't tell you enough how cool UMSA is but that's another topic.
So I have no photos to post but got news. I visited this guy again and told him about my worries regarding the caps mentioned above told him I were into electronics myself. He gave me a spare CRT board; that's pretty cool It wasn't made for the same model so I couldn't directly swap it with mine but it had all the relevant components on it so I replaced C707 and C711 myself. Current situation is as follows: I have two frankenstein TVs now, The "bad" TV, the one with the scratched screen and the used board I bought still has crazy pulsating distortion when stuff flickers on the screen (big time sensuality - the part with the tv channels broadcasting noise) This was my original problem (alongside the scratch) The "good" TV now has the "new" unscratched screen and my good old board. Distortion is visible when a letterboxed graphic, or something surrounded by a black area appears but does not cause pulses over time. This is why posting photos won't matter now. I'm giving away the "bad" one and can't care about that. As for the "good" one, replacing above mentioned C707 and C711 did not change anything but the viewing experience is better than before now that I have my old board. Any problems I still have is probably related to the remaining components on the CRT board or even the tube itself. I'll be happy for further pointers but if there are none, I can't complain This is all on me now; if I check another repair service, I'll have paid more than a new CRT in total |
