Sound lags while recording on certain games

While recording some games I found that certain games, for example Dynablaster, will ALWAYS have sound lagging on the recorded video. I'm recording in 784x600 with TSCC codec and and PCM audio. I tried everything I could think of, different WinUAE version, lowering the resolution to 320x256, setting CPU emulation to "Match A500 speed" (instead of fastest possible). It's strange that this only happens on certain games, on most games it works fine. It's a bitch having recorded a bunch of videos to find out that a couple of them are garbage. Any ideas what can be causing this?

You could try this :
  1. Start the AVI capture
  2. Start DynaBlaster (let it run in demo mode or whatever for a few seconds)
  3. Hit F12, move the CPU idle slider two or three notches right (starting from far left)
  4. Play the part you want recorded
I'll assume the sound buffer is set to 2 or 3 during your attempts.

Correct me if i'm wrong but sound buffers (or sound devices) should be completely independent from capturing. But yes, i think i once encountered sync problems as well when using warp mode during recording.

I can definitely confirm this lag for Dynablaster.

I know some people use screen capture software like FRAPS or Camtasia instead of WinUAE's video output.

"Sound lags" does not really explain anything at all..

Probably something to do with Dynablaster being 60Hz, but as usual, I don't see or hear anything different in recorded video.

Sound buffer is set to 4. The lag is that the sound is loosing sync with the video. From the beginning of the video it's about 700ms too early, but if I delay the sound in a a video editing app so that the sound and video is in sync in the beginning, after 1 min the sound is not in sync any longer.

Try NTSC button in output panel. (this should be changed to automatic I think..)

Buffer size or CPU Idle don't have anything to do with recording.

I guess it has something to do with the 60hz, my recorded video is in 50 fps though.

Strange, NTSC would have side effects here.

I know. In my case, it helps improving AV sync & scrolling smoothness when recording, the benefit of this workaround is immediate on playback. I don't even bother rehearsing video recordings in which the audio is not in sync with the video.

Nothing wrong with that Toni, I hope .

No, Dynablaster uses a fake NTSC mode which can cause some sound problems in PAL mode. There are threads about this issue.

Toni is right, it was ntsc

Just a test that turned out good. Requires the Huffyuv codec.

Never ever use . Its crap and not possible to download anything atm. Use Supashare, Plunder, or Megaupload for example. There are so many but is the worst one can pick.

I always like to take a peek at someone else's capture work but i cannot download your file due to premium limitations (currently).

Btw, HuffYUV is kinda inefficient, lossy and useless on RGB output. Use RGB compressors (TSCC, CamStudioCodec, Lagarith) or compress double sized to final lossy compressors like h264/MeGUI instead. Just a suggestion.

Seems like the file was downloaded more than 10 times it seems, so you need an account to download it. My favourite is http://www.fileshost.com/. Good speed and upto 500 MB.

Slightly off-topic.

How does Lagarith compare to TSCC ?

Is TSCC still the king ?

Its still the king yes. Camstudio Codec is 2nd, free and separately available. Lagarith is 3rd if i reckon correctly. Based on my own experiences.

If you had used huffyuv at least once, you would know that yuv conversion is only optional, with perfect, lossless RGB compression (and ultra-fast decompression, optimized for single core CPU's) being it's main and most useful feature

Here's a mirror for the vid anyways: http://www.fileshost.com/download.php?id=F19AFF251 (thanks Druid for the hint)

Wow, 362 MB for one minute Nice quality output for sure, but bit of an overkill (size wise)

Yep, and only the old original codec is capable of RGB. The recent builds of ffdshow are strictly YV12 and YUY2 only (for a reason). Your video track is 368MB HuffYUV compared to 1.3MB TSCC. Its not really an option.
