Getting my A1200 online
I was wondering whats the best way to get my A1200 online? Is it even worth it at this point? I don't have an accelerator yet, it's bone stock other than a harddrive. I do have a 3com pcmcia card tho. I was looking at Miami and amitcp. Let me know what you think.
Thanks! |

Without extra memory it wouldn't be worth it, but if you get some extra memory you are in business. Useful for downloading needed files from Aminet, as well as downloading files through FTP. Miami is easy to set up, but people say AmiTCP is faster (I can't feel a difference though).

Miami is much easier to set up but will use most of the 2MB of RAM you have.
For AmiTCP you should have experiences in setting up a network manually because the installer is buggy and there is no other configuration program. A memory expansion of at least 8MB is recommended in any case if you want to do more with the network than just set it up. E.g. a web browser will need even more RAM than Miami needs. |

It would be a headache without extra ram but if you buy a 8mb trapdoor ram expansion it will most porbably mess up your pcmcia port =\

Way to go Smiley not ALL 8mb expansions cripple the pcmcia port
& quite frankly just a straight 8mb expansion might not be the best investment for this user IF he has aspirations to run WHDload games from his HD So in a practical sense better to identify if he plans to be gaming more than "Novelty surfing " |

There is also TermiteTCP that will eat up only some of your memory, also it will not be worth the hassle, better get an expansion card

@pan1k:
Here you can find a guide of how to install AmiTCP. This is the driver which should be suitable for your card, as long as it is a 16-bit card. Don't forget that the driver needs CardReset to be run before the TCP/IP stack is started. @DoctorQ: It varies how much faster AmiTCP is, but if the network card isn't starting to become the bottleneck in the equation, but the CPU/Memory is the bottleneck (10Mbit network and less than 040 with fast memory-interface), then AmiTCP is generally more than twice as fast if you don't have a MNI-driver for your card. If you have an MNI-driver for your card, AmiTCP is less than twice as fast, but much faster. With a slow enough network card and a fast enough cpu and memory, then it will ofcourse not matter if AmiTCP is more effective when measuring network throughput. You will get more cpu cycles to spare though. Last edited by patrik; 20 June 2006 at 19:07. |

Well, when using a BPPC 040/175 with BVision, with a Netgear MA401 using prism2.device, will there be a speed gain in switching from Miami Deluxe to AmiTCP? Are there any differences in using Genesis supplied with OS3.9 as opposed to using AmiTCP from Aminet? IIRC Genesis = AmiTCP??? |

The 802.11b cards max out at around 600-700kB/sec, which the Blizzards 25Mhz 040 and rather slow memory interface should not be enough to reach when using Miami and definately not Miami without a MNI driver. So yes, you should notice a difference in transfer speed. Disregarding, it saves you cpu time.
The noticed speed gain though depends on what you do. For example when surfing you won't notice much of a difference as the transfer speed is not the limiting factor then, but say if you use smbfs to mount your pcs shares, and copy large amounts of data you will notice a difference. Yeah, you are right about Genesis - it is basically AmiTCP4.3 with a half-buggy GUI bolted ontop. Last edited by patrik; 20 June 2006 at 19:49. |

I'm probably going to get a good accelerator card (i.e. the DCE 1260/50). I'm pretty serious about Amigas, My first was an A1000, I've also had a 4000T, 3000 and a A1200 ahwile back. So sad that I sold them. But I plan to towerize the A1200 and install some decent upgrades! Thanks guys. I'll probably go with the AmiTCP since setting up networks is a breeze for me. Just got to save up for my accelerator now. I'm probably going to get a 4.1G drive and the right ide cable. I basically looted an old Powerbook 150 for it's 127MB drive and it's ide cable. It looks terrible but it works!
