Bard's Tale III (Thief of Fate) Amiga/WinUAE help needed

After replaying and finishing the first two Bard's Tale games on WinUAE, I've been trying to get the third part to work. I've run into the following two problems:

- after pressing C to cast a spell, I get a long list of spells. The only way to cast a spell appears to be to scroll down using up or down keys, or to use the mouse. This is slow and tiresome. In the previous games, it was possible to just enter the 4-character spell code, but attempting to type a spell code has no effect. The command summary card for the C64 version says that keyboard input is possible for at least the C64 version. What about the Amiga version?

- monster attack rate in the the very first dungeon (more specifically, in Tarjan's Temple - Level II) is absurdly high. I literally can't move one square or turn without being attacked. Assuming that this must be a timing problem, I've been using "Match A500 speed", cycle-exact emulation, even 100% floppy speed but that has not fixed the problem. Is the attack rate supposed to be this way, and am I supposed to play Safety Song all the time to stop the encounter spam?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, I only played the C64 version back when the game came out, and I don't recall having these problems.

I'm using WinUAE 1.5.3 with Kickstart 1.2 and the BT3 disks that are distributed with Gamebase Amiga.
