a1200 floppy drive fried?

im having strange trouble with the floppy drive of my a1200.

it was working fine then suddenly it wasnt booting. i tried checking the cables etc becuase i'd swapped it with another floppy earlier.

after changing the cable around to different positions etc trying to get a reaction from drive i switched it on and got a strange noise followed by smoke.

what is the correct way to insert the floppy cable and are they known to die?

I do not think that inserting wrongly the data cable of a FDD will fry it... I have done this error many times with some strange FDD's for pc's.... I guess the drive was ready to hit the old dusty road... and it did...

That sucks when things like that goes smoke. Most recently my powersupply on pc died... miggies still fine though

The drive is surely fried. Like keropi I have connected the cable the wrong way many times on a PC and had no problems, so hopefully your Amiga's CIA chip is still OK and will work with a new floppy drive.
