sorry, I am just bad at these things...
so i managed to make a hd, format it and install workbench 3.1.
the guide i am following (http://guide.abime.net/wb3.1/chap4.htm) is for winUAE so some bits just dont work.

I managed to get access to the files it told me i needed to have by putting them in a folder and using that as a hard drive. it is now though telling me to use shell, but when i do this i just get a message saying "Unable to open your tool SYS:System/CLI"

any ideas? is this task just beyond my capability...

Sounds to me like Workbench isn't installed properly.

You'll probably get more help if you are more specific of what steps you have taken, and how you have configured the Amiga (attaching FS-UAE.log is a good idea).
