Floating-Point Unit. Or maths coprocessor. Essential for fast calculation of vector graphics I should imagine. A standard in CPU architecture for a long while now but used to be an optional add-on back in the day to cut costs, hence the name. Being Amiga hardware, it probably has a nickname!
