I am thinking of getting an accelerator card for my a1200,
ther are currently 2 on ebay and i wan to know if either of them are worth buying. They are:

68030 /40MHZ APOLLO TURBO BOARD MARK3 ALSO HAS FPU 68882 FITTED VERY FAST BOARD TAKES UPTO 32MB, 4MB SIMM INCLUDED WITH BOARD.
Currently at £6.50

and:

Apollo 68040 28MHZ with Cooling Fan
32MB SIMM (FAST RAM)

Which one of these should I go for?
The 8030 only has 2 days to go!

If you want REAL SPEED get the 040er, if you only want to run OS 3.9 nicely and have some speed advantage go for the 030

That's about the size of it, Retro!

@Mick: the 040 is several times faster than the 030, but if you don't need power apps then it's OTT.

But bear in mind that the 040 comes with a 32mb simm, and the 030 only has a 4mb one.

Also, if you have a desktop (non-towered) A1200, power might be a prob with the 040 - the hungriest 68k processor out there.

Apollo cards are OK. I have one myself, and it works great. They are not regarded as premium products like Blizzards are, but that is to do with the lack of little phase5 extras, rather than raw performance.

'More bang for your buck', I believe the expression is...

Out of the three main UK dealers (Power and Analogic being the others), Eyetech have the best customer service by a mile. Never had any problems with them. (Unlike the other two, grr). They give the impression that they actually care that you are sending them your dough.

Prices on generic products are fairly similar across the board, but occasional offers pop up from one or another firm, making the purchase of a particular item markedly cheaper.

And let me preach again, I wouldn't recommend them. I think that a combination of an apollo 630 with an HD, would run way too hot, at least for my liking. last thing I want is for the chipset to melt :P That section is the part of the A600 that runs the hotter in all the motherboard (WHO thought about putting the chipset just below the HD?!)

They are not that rare, depends of what yer looking for. There is a common model, the 40Mhz one methinks, and the 50Mhz model is the one that is harder to get!
