Gary Gygax passed away

Gary Gygax, the creator of Dungeons & Dragons and so the dad of every Role Playing Game, died today at 69.

Everyone who ever played a pen & paper RPG a game like Ultima, Phantasie, Ishar, World of Warcraft and so on, must tell him thank you from the deep of his heart!

Grant us a lucky dice throw from the Heavens, Gary!!!

Thanks for starting this thread.

Many computer games, a whole genre, would not exist without this legend, GARY GYGAX.
He borrowed from Howard, Tolkien etc. and co-created (with Arneson), D&D.
I cried when I heard the news.

If you want to sample this man's work, might I suggest TOMB OF HORRORS and TEMPLE OF ELEMENTAL EVIL.

R.I.P.

The greatest DUNGEON MASTER of them all.

I've never played any of the games you've listed but it's always sad to hear that someone has died who made a difference to so many people.

RIP.

I'm still fond of the first version of Dungeon and dragons, as the most entertaining one, even if i've played very little since, the ones that came later were too much heavy for me.
there was also a deal of great storytelling in that few pages. Thank you mr. Gygax!

I fully agree with you ! I still have fond memories of the "Basic Set" I used to have, back in the late 70's.

Later on, I more or less switched for other RPGs (mainly from Chaosium or FGU), but D&D was the one that started it all.

Thank you so much for providing us with so many hours of delightful journeying, Mr. Gygax ! Have a well deserved rest now...

TEMPLE OF ELEMENTAL EVIL - Ah, many a happy evening spent with pencil + paper + dice. (Oh, and friends - even geeks have friends)

Sad news indeed.

We've played Midgard, Cyberpunk and Earthdawn. Never tried this D&D pen & paper stuff back in time.

@Belg

That's a nice picture. RIP and throw the dice in heaven.

Anyone know if there's some online guest book or address to send best wishes to his family? I'd think they'd enjoy hearing how he touched the lives of so many.

I imagine RPGs would have eventually been created (Arneson was already heading that way) but even still, with Gygax, D&D was made so well it was a success pretty much right off the bat. And then there was Advanced D&D which was pretty much the epitome. I had tons of games, but it was AD&D that everyone had and played and actually just enjoyed reading the rules to when not playing. It was like some badge of honor to come out with some obscure rule or know the weakness of some rare monster.

Good times, good times.

Thanks for that. I just sent an email telling them of how I've made several friends by way of D&D.
