How to make a PC based virtual Amiga?

I've googled and searched threads with no luck.

What is the best way to go about configuring a x86 / XP machine to boot to winUAE / AIAB?

I know Amiga Forever has a solution, but it involves purchasing the product and having the CD in the drive at boot up (not kid friendly, as my kids destroy CDs).

Is it simply a matter of configuring the XP system.ini?

Yes, you use the line 'shell=[myfile].exe' to boot a different shell.

Presumably you can use 'winuae.exe' and probably the best thing to do is include the WinUAE folder in the 'path'.

Then pass it options to autostart with a certain config, I presume this is possible.

you can load the config file directly with the
showgui=no
setting, but i don't know where to load the file for it to start without windows show its screen

Thinking laterally, the MAME community have been booting MAME and bypassing as much of XP as possible for years. Options include boot screen editors of sorts:
