Haha, the A500 is 2m away and it's drive is pointing away from me, so no can do. I could have stuck it in the A3000 or A4000 by just leaning over.. :-D

Those are 2m away too. ;-)

I was a bit amused at the sentence in parenthesis..

On this token does kick start 2 and up just expect you to through the disk in the drive?

What's also interesting is that her page mentions "Bards Tale IV (unpublished)".

it's interesting to learn who drew it, but it really is a bad drawing.

I disagree.
Considering you want something small (not much "k" in ROM/RAM) but easily convey's what to do, I think it's a great use of minimized graphics.

You also have to keep in mind how it's drawn. It's basically constructed from graphics.library's Move(), Draw() and Flood() functions with only Amiga (twice), Work, bench and V 1.3 being single color bitmaps. So you only draw some lines and fill areas, which is obviously artistically limiting. A 4 color bitmap of this size would have been bigger than this.

It's rough. The disc isn't even in the right scale... it's too big compared to the hand and it's too wide. You can only blame that on limitations of the person drawing - and I'm pretty sure she'd agree too.

If I'd been in charge and the option was that or just text, I'd have picked text only.

Well, that would've solved ONE technical problem, that some guy in Sweden asked a swedish computer magazine to help with. When he got his Amiga, the hand came up, and he thought it was a virus (which he's obviously heard a lot of). He turned off, wrote a letter to DMZ and asked if it was safe to turn on. This was back when getting a letter into a magazine probably took a month.

But still, I'm glad you weren't the one to decide. While it may not be proportionally correct or particularly well-drawn, it was awesome to have actual graphics showing up from the get go. It made the Amiga look so far ahead (which it basically was) and almost futuristic. If you only had text, it would seem like a step back, when compared to the C64, where you could just turn it on and begin to type in commands.

I have always dreamt of having the possibility to hack both 1.3 and 3.1 kickstart rom images into something more meaningfull. Think for example, on changing 3.1 insert floppy anim, by a rotating boing ball for example, a spinning hard drive or whatever
I wish Remus had such capabilities!

I doubt that.
I think the sizing was intentional to emphasize the disk and show the logo rather than a too scale, but less "Amiga" hand.

It's not a work of art. It's a graphic designed to convey an action without using much memory.

Very very impressive, IMHO.

I will agree with desiv too, specially knowing how the disk is written on screen. Fucking real time graphics? Who would have thought?

It's very functional and conveys pretty much what you had to do when you were faced with the screen.

I wonder though why Sheryl does not mention this on her page. It has to be her biggest hit

Yes, it's a bad drawing.

The sentimentality of it is entirely separate - a bit like remembering the very first crudely drawn vagina that you saw on a toilet wall.

Um.. Funny.. I don't have any such feelings/memories for bathroom art..

We just disagree...

Clearly we do - it's evocative and memorable, but it's not a good drawing by any stretch of the imagination.

I would love to see the woman behind that picture interviewed on Matt Chat!

The show is focused on games only, though (I think, anyway)... but maybe a 'special edition' or something?
