I just got a reply from the author of PPJoy:

Quote:
Hi,

What you are seeing with the DirectPad Pro interface is your
ECP (I presume) parallel port not properly switching to standard
parallel port mode.

The DirectPad Pro interface requires reading input values from
output only lines (!). On older ports this worked, and some ECP
ports you can switch to this mode (e.g. the Compaq Deskpro
machines I develop on.) I am not sure all ECP ports will properly
switch to SPP mode.

[If you look at the DirectPad Pro diagram you will see you axis
inputs are on pins 1, 14 ,16, 17 - and if you look at a LPT ref
you'll see it is output pins. Look at
http://www.beyondlogic.org/spp/parallel.htm if you are interested. ]

In short, I'd suggest you try the Amiga 4 Player interface - it
does not require any fancy tricks from the parallel port. Just
about any port newer then 1995 should support bidirectional mode.

Talking about building interfaces - I built round 10-12 of them
to test PPJoy :-) Lots of soldering!
So. It seems it is my parallel port, but it doesn't explain why my current 4 Player adaptor doesnt work....

I'll build another one and see what happens

*sigh*

I kick the shit out of myself. I just realised in the CMOS of all new machines, you have the ability to change from ECP, EPP and SPP LPT ports.

I've always had mine set to ECP+EPP (newer LPT)...Stupid me! Change it to SPP and it works fine (it's actually called Standard in my CMOS)!

ARGH! Friggin hell! I wish I'd remembered this sooner

Case Closed. If anyone else has the same problem, there's the solution

*sigh*

Guys I found that amiga4player pre-made joystick adaptor but found mine isnt wired up for 2-button joystick operation! I cant open it up so im going to make my own later!

I have been using the DirectDadpro interface for ages now! using on XP now with NTpadpro! This interface has 2 resistors on the fire button lines... on PPjoy it recommends not to use this interface! how come? it works ok!

Also with that amig4player adaptor! can I have two joysticks on it at once? I had a go but it wouldn't work!

I recently built an amiga 4 way cable for ppjoy, had problems with it then I installed this program now. Same thing happens, button is fine but axis aren't detected.
