A1200 or laptop with WINAUE

Hi All
If you had a choice, A1200 with HD and 4Meg of extra ram or a 1.8GHz laptop with 768Meg ram running WINAUE?

nothing beats the real thing ...

but if that laptop is one of the new smaller ones ... (9' screen or something like that) I may reconsider

A1200 any day. I have a 1.7Ghz laptop next to my A1200 and much prefer the speed and ease of use of the A1200.

1.8Ghz laptop doesn't say much, like what type of processor, what type of windows (different windows = different memory consumption etc).

Anyway, if WinUAE games runs smooth on it (which I guess they do, if you use the correct settings) I would definetely go with a laptop.

1. It becomes a portable Amiga.
2. It becomes almost any Amiga model you want.
3. Your emulated Amiga will be faster than a standard 500/1200 and you could have 500mb of memory if you wanted.
4. You can easily install things into WinUAE as PC>Amiga transfers isn't necessary as it's a PC it's running on (making it easier when downloading things, torrents and all that. I know the Amiga can download stuff too, but it's not even near the smoothness of a PC cuz of all the nice programs the PC has ).
5. If you would want to watch movies and the emulated Amiga isn't powerful enough, just watch it in Windows.
6. The games loads faster if played from floppy.
7. No need to buy an Amiga harddrive .
8. You can quicksave/quickload in games.
9. You can record what you play, rip music, take screenshots etc without installing any programs as it's all built-in in WinUAE.
10. Not buying a real Amiga saves you LOTS and LOTS of money, no need for lots of memory, harddrives and stuff.... it's soooo cheap.
11.... well, got to go to work now... but the list goes on and on and on and on....

Provided the laptop ran WinUAE well and was stable I would go with this over the A1200. My stock A1200 with HD has not been loaded up since I got WinUAE running sweet on my laptop and PC and I am now actually considering selling it and all the games, peripherals, etc.

The different emulation modes of WinUAE is what impresses me the most. I can play the AB3d series well, run the big games, take more advantage of pre-load.

I think WinUAE is awesome. I especially like it on my laptop as I only use this for serious stuff and emulating. No modern gaming. Like Ironclaw said, it becomes a portable Amiga or, in my case, a portable nostalgia machine.

Awesome.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this is pretty much an "Emulation vs the real thing"-type thread isn't it? We've had plenty of these before... (and probably shouldn't be in prb.Hardware either.)

Yes, but I can't have the same feeling of real Amiga. This feeling is unbeatable!!! No present or future near perfection emulation software can give it. You need real hardware.

However I believe you must have Amiga and PC both. Like Rebel-CD32, I have a 1.8Ghz laptop next to my A1200 and much prefere tu use the A1200.

Here's a couple of thoughts:

Real Amiga A1200 - Great, smashing, super! Convenient? Maybe not.
(Win)UAE on Laptop - Convenient. Great, smashing, super? Maybe not.

but:
Amithlon on Laptop - Convenient & Great, smashing, super!
(Possibly hard to find a copy. Supports v.v. few laptops...)

but, but:
X-Amiga on Laptop - Convenient & Great, smashing, super!
(Can't see any downsides... at present)

you will have a long, thankless, and ultimately pointless journey ahead of you trying to convince Ironclaw of this.

I'd go for the laptop, as i already have a perfectly good A1200 with more ram, better processor and other goodies attached already!

I don't want to convince him, it's only a personal opinion.

I use Amiga (since '89) simply because I love to use it.
I don't like PC, but I use them simply because I'm forced to use them.

Sorry I have to disagree,

I am not a fan, but Windows XP on a modern sub £400 PC is more stable and usable than AmigaOS3.x on the fastest 680x0 ever was.

Get real! Stop this nostalgic romance, remember the Guru Meditations and flashing power LED! Remember the slow redraw of the windows and the Icons being displayed one at a time on a DIR listing!

Yay, finally some support and backup .

WHAT DID I SAY?! ..... Laptop all the way my friend . WinUAE is unbeatable... it lacks only ONE thing > the nostalgic feeling of a real Amiga.... (and don't give me that crap that were in the other thread long ago about the Amiga is more compatible , maybe 0.01% of the Amiga stuff doesn't work in WinUAE ).
