It's a Knockout! 2018/19 Round 1: Sensible World of Soccer

Use the original release from 1994 of SWoS
Leave options as defaults - eg 3 minute games
Choose DIY Competition > League
Select 8 teams - play each team x1 - 3 points for a win
Leave all other settings as default

Choose these Nations Teams:

Argentina
Brazil
England
France
Germany
Holland
Italy
Spain

Select one of the above teams as your own and set the other 7 as CPU opponents.

Score = (League Points * 10,000) + (Goal Difference * 100) + Scored Goals

Post a picture of the final table with your score written underneath.

Tied scores will be separated by whoever submitted their score first.

No cheating (including save states) - anyone caught cheating gets disqualified.

The top 2 of every group advance to the quarter finals. Good luck to all involved - may battle commence...

I face the two best players in the world at Sensible Soccer.
It was the worst draw possible

I chose Brazil and with fourth attempt finally won all matches
Was nervous at start of last game against Spain and didn't help that their defenders injured Bebeto after about 15 mins. Eventually Romario scored in 70th minute and that was enough. Shots on goal 11-1.
Probably Brazil is best team of the bunch. Argentina also has excellent attacking power with Batistuta and Balbo attacking and Ortega supporting in number 10.

Changed score to -10,000 for anyone that hasn't submitted a score yet. This way even if you lose every match you'll definitely have a higher score than someone who didn't post a score.

I agree. I started by trying with my own national team, England and they are ok. But Brazil is such an all round strong team in SWOS 94.

I actually prefer playing with Argentina and I run the set up you mention, except I run it with a ATTACK formation and have Ortega immediately behind Balbo and the Angel Gabriel. However the best player in their team for me is Redondo, the Real Madrid cross dressing legend. He's got pace and strength and provides a solidity in the centre that controls games.

@linesmachine: Well played winning every match with England! I would have liked to play Argentina rather than Brazil, but goalkeeper (Islas) was a bit letdown. You have good understanding of tactics, I again tend to just use ordinary 4-4-2, as always, even when I'm losing

England feels definitely stronger than Holland and Germany in this version.

Beat Holland and Italy and had draws against France and Spain. Lost the Falkland war 1-8 though.

My tactics for SWOS generally involve playing ATTACK. Although I'll often play the first game (with a new team) and see how the front left and right wide strikers are, because if it suits the team to plat them as wingers I'll edit the tactics in the second game to reflect that. I'll also use as many subs as possible int he first game just to check who is who., surprises always come up in this game, even after 25 years of playing! For example Claudio Carniggia is on the bench for Argentina and he is a wonderfully attacking winger and should be brought on.

Interestingly, Maradona himself WAS part of the 1994 Argentina squad, but obviously doesn't feature in the game.

@linesmachine: Indeed, Maradona appears in International Sensible Soccer (World Cup edition), but not anymore in first SWOS published. Maybe SWOS teams are just after World Cup 94...

@john4p: Datas are actually from SWOS 96/97 not original. I looked same site, and it's choice "original SWOS" leads to 96/97 datas, Argentina's striker Caniggia isn't there, instead Borelli etc.

Unfortunately haven't seen anybody compiling list of playerdatas of original SWOS. Looked around and found SWOS96/97 datas from two websites, but that's all...

If you're this good with Germany you might have a chance to win every match with Argentina. Use formation 4-3-3 and replace Ortega (M) with Caniggia (A) then you have 3 top scorers. The whole team feels super fast, seems like there's not one slow player.
