The new DOOM seems to be back to the basics in game play and such, it is getting high marks there

Summer sale on gog is already running since a couple of some days.

Rebel Galaxy might be worth a look. If you're more into CRPGs, have a look at Wasteland 2 or Pillars of Eternity.

I've been hearing good things about Doom from a guy in work all week. Well worth a look by the sounds of it.

Lately I watched couple of Elite Dangerous videos, and might get it, if well discounted. (If so, might then invest bit to get proper joystick with throttle control)

I'm still waiting for better then 66% for GOTY version of Fallout/Skyrim games.

I've been playing Elite: Dangerous since launch (~1.5 years), loving it! Got a cheap stick/throttle setup (HOTAS) for it which really makes it. But there are also many people who bought it and didn't get into it. If you liked Frontier, you should really like Elite - it's very similar design-wise but just exceptionally great looking! So many good desktop backgrounds This one is my current Amiga backdrop. It's my ship (a Cobra of course) floating in a planetary ring, looking at the star the planet orbits. Awesome stuff!

And for the OP, Satellite Reign is currently £23 and likely to go down a little in the sales. It's the spiritual successor to Syndicate, plays something like it with some RPG elements, and like Elite, it looks awesome! Between it and Elite I haven't looked at another game in over a year.

Thank you for sharing your experience with Elite.

Good thing about E: DA nowadays is that you can get the base game which is not too expensive at all and if you like it you can get the expansion content.

The time investment is what puts me off right now, I've already got enough time sinks

Yes, game is time sink, and that was only reason last time I did not get it.

@Daedalus: What are game mode? Is it hard to start new game and get going?

Well, there's a steep difficulty curve, so it can take a little while to get some traction. That's similar to Frontier really, when you start off pretty much any ship out there can destroy you simply for giggles. But your first ship gets replaced for free so it's not such a big deal, and steering clear of illegal or high risk activities and sticking to high security systems will help avoid being randomly murdered. You can also join up with a friend in a "wing" for mutual protection, sharing any bounties you claim.

The main game modes are:
- Open, where you share space with everyone else playing;
- Private group where only people in your group are visible;
- Solo, where only computer characters are present (good for times when other players decide to shoot noobs for sport);
- CQC, which is a special arena shooting mode mostly unrelated to the main game, but good for some casual dogfighting.

There is no hand holding or in-game tutorial as you go along, though there are separate tutorials outside the main game that teach you the basics of flight, docking, weapons etc. There's a lot in the game and it can be a time sink, but if you're not too concerned with racing to the top you can easily play in short, infrequent sessions. Some missions can be picked up that only take 30 minutes for example.

Thank you for detailed explanation. So there is a solo play, but you still have to be connected to server in order to play.

Can you use the same ship in any of those mods, or each mode requires own ship?

Yes, the solo mode still needs to be connected to the server as the background simulation of the galaxy is all server-side: missions, markets, political influences, anything you can have an effect on are all the same for the three main game modes. The only difference between them is the interaction with other human players. Your ship, your money, your influence, fines, missions and everything else are the same in all three. Some people disapprove of that since you can switch from open to solo mode to avoid a human player blockade for example, but at the end of the day it's up to each player.

The CQC mode is different and is just short multiplayer deathmatches in separate arenas. The ships are separate, special CQC versions of small ships in the main game, and you can't bring your own ship into the arena, or any arena ships out. There's also a separate CQC rank so your ranks in the main game are separate.
