Life and Death - Working version?

I've played several versions of Life and Death but it seems they all "crash" at the end of the second operation (Aneurysm Grafting).

Having repaired the aorta, I want to suture up the patient but immediately the assistants start making a fuzz about me not making the suture on the wound (which is not true!). Still, I can finish the operation (the assistants complaining all the way to the end) and the Chief of Surgery will be outraged, sending me to medical class. There, they'll teach me procedures I followed perfectly well during the operation (thanks a lot!).

Does anyone know of a working version of this game? By "working", I mean:
- It's possible to succeed the Aneurysm Grafting (and thereby complete the game).

- The medical team you choose for the operation will actually show up. For instance: If you choose Danielson and Brewer, Manglier and Menzies will assist you. What's up with that?!

Hi Kitty.

I've tried IPF, ADFs and WHDLoad-versions. The IPF-version is an original (I suppose) as the copy protection is still working. I thought it might have something to do with a badly cracked version, but appartently not.

The problems (medical staff + failing the last operation) are still there...

Hi adalsgaard

I think considering your experiencing the same problem on all image types, it makes me think it may be your setup in winuae and not actually a problem with the image at all.

What configuration are you using to play the game?

Hi Kitty.

Configuration (WinUAE 1.5.0):
Model: A500
CPU: 68000
Chipset: OCS
KS ROM: 1.3
RAM: Chip=512K, Slow=512K

I can't imagine why the setup would influence on medical staff choices .

Anyway, if someone can confirm that they ever completed the game (with the medical staff of their own choice), then it's a different matter.

The version of winuae you are using is very old, winuae is on version 2.01 now and many things have been fixed since the version you are using so a new version will more than likely fix your problem, also the latest beta may be worth trying too ;-)

As I suspected, the WinUAE version had nothing to do with it.

The problem must within the game itself... Did anyone ever complete the game?

Regarding the selection of the medical staff: It seems that there's a mix up between Danielson/Brewer and Manglier/Menzies. I found out about it by actually selection Manglier/Menzies and then I got Danielson/Brewer. Go figure... Perhaps someone skilled could correct this error?

Still, I'm still looking for a version of the game making it possible to complete the Aneurysm Grafting operation. I'm pretty sure that the "you-missed-the-wound-with-that-suture"-statement is a bug since it's no suture problem playing the PC version. But hey... I would love for someone to tell me about the wound I apparently didn't suture prior to closing the aorta (that is: If I'm mistaken about a bug being present).

All that speculating does not make much sense.
Nonetheless, an assumption:

I'd say the "bug" occurs because the game does an internal code jump (to the "suture failure" routine) which is not supposed to occur, maybe by erroneously jumping to a wrong offset.
You found yourself that it is not due to a bad crack, because the issue is reproducible on the IPF (unmodified original!) version too.

However, a REAL THING test has to come into effect. If it works on real Amiga, then it's indeed a WinUAE bug.
Without a test on the real machine, nothing can (nor should) be judged about the matter.

I haven't had a real Amiga since 1995, making it pretty hard to test it myself.

Anyone interested in testing this on a real Amiga?
Any other suggestions on how to solve the problem?

oh my god, you just so made me want to play this again!! didn't play it for years...last time I tried was on PC using DosBox, but game crashed to desktop randomly during surgeries, I never managed to complete a single one.

Didn't know (and didn't really think/care to check) about an Amiga version, I'm gonna give it a go I don't own a real Amiga so I won't be able to test it myself, but count on me for updating this post, even if only to confirm the bug you're reporting.

And also count on me to be part of the "Life & Death working version Lobby" if indeed I (and I probably will) face the same bug

Any sweetheart to try the game on a real machine to help us apprentice surgeons out?

Hi Nostalgeek.

How's the aneurysm grafting coming along? I'm curious whether the suturing will mess your chances of succes. Hopefully not.
