WinUAE Amiga Gaming - How to save progress?

This is not really an issue with a WinUAE problem, but is more to do with "how can I save my progress within a game"? I've heard of the term "savestate" but have never used one, on any retro emulator.

One thing that turns me off of retrogaming is that I can never save my progress - I will play a few rounds but then I feel dismayed that when I return to the game I will have to start from the beginning, for the umpteenth time, and this is true of Atari 8-Bit and Amiga games.

Just this morning, I completed the first two missions on "Cannon Fodder", and for once I wanted to save my progress, so I tried creating a saves disk on WinUAE, but the game didn't recognise it, so I figured that a savestate would be the best, simplest way to save my progress.

So how can I use a savestate in WinUAE? I don't see any options to do so.

EDIT: Sorry, just spotted it, tucked away in "Misc".

Cannon Fodder does not use AmigaDOS format. You need to create "custom disk" (extended adf) and it must be also formatted in-game. (Also at least some versions of Cannon Fodder crash during formatting without 1M Chip RAM..)

Yes, Toni, WinUAE kindly informed me of that. I did so, and it worked.

I like using save states because you can have multiple for all kinds of games. save state right before entering that room or trying out that challenge. Games can sometimes be limiting on when and where they allow you to save a game.

But, it is certainly personal preference I think.

I am a purist and save states seem like a small cheat to me

Also, if you want to use retroachievements, save states are disabled. And since I am hoping Amiga retroachievements will be supported in the future, I want to be prepared.

Back in time, "save state" was possible with an Amiga Action Replay

For all of those who have enough time for example to play through Lionheart or any other Amiga games that did not have a way to save progress, without interruption - great, but for rest of us who have kids, wife, life... etc. save state is there to help us.

Hope Amiga never gets stupid achievements... because people get just to creative and create some just crazy one, unobtainable one for normal casual players...
