Champion Driver (1991)

Hi.

I remember that, back in the day, my copy of Champion Driver (released in 1991 by Idea) had some bad music at certain places (crash screen, classification screen, etc.). At the time I didn't knew what could be the cause of that but now-a-days I suspect it was a bad crack. The crack I had was the one done by Quartex and that's the one I find on the net every time I search for ADFs. I found a few IPFs and ADFs of the original uncracked game, to see if it had good music, but it has a nasty copy protection scheme that takes A LOT of time to load, rendering the crack a much friendlier version. But, unfortunately, I can't seem to be able to find a proper crack of the game.

Does anyone know where I can find one?

Tried them all and all of them seem to have the same problem (one easy way to test it is to enter the shop even before one starts a race. The music will glitch. It happens more times across the game as I said above).

Since all the available cracks seems to be the Quartex one (I don't know if there is any other crack), I'm tempted to say that the problem - if absent from the original game, as I supposed it is (though I haven't test it) - is probably due to the cracking. Too bad that this is an overlooked game, 'cos it does have some fine playability. I reckon it merited a new and proper crack like some other old classics have had.

Can anyone get the Ipf of this game to work in WinUAE?
I type my name in, press fire, It then stops at track 24, loads a black screen with a green race track, I hit enter and I get a garbled green screen.

It is copy protection. It waits for single key press. Wrong = crash. Correct = game starts.

Seems configuration problem with those garbled sound.
At least it works with 1MB Chip without garbled sound.
I have no idea if its same with the Original, cant check the IPF because missing manual.

Any Idea what the correct key press is or do I have to reset and try every key?

The WHDLoad version works though and I think that was made with the IPF.

Enter debugger (make sure to use END+F12 to prevent game from seeing any key presses and causing it to crash), check value of D4. Find HRM keyboard matrix page, find matching value, exit debugger, press key

For example: D4 00000017 = find $17 from keyboard code diagram. $17 = I.

(No patches, I don't know if game has any checksum checks, probably not because keyboard check is so boring but you never know)

Just read a typed manual from Belgarath, is that you?
There is no mention of keys in it. The only codes needed are to skip the kart section.
Can you remember how to start it?

Yeh I typed out the manual, the instructions are on the back of a big poster along with all the pictures of the courses for the copy protection, makes it difficult to scan. I may scan it piece by piece and stitch them together at some point but the game is buried in the spare room at the moment.

So it's something to do with the race circuit that's shown on the screen.
"If it's this circuit then press this button" sort of protection?

EDIT: Cracked it, here's a save state for the IPF.

Yup, no garbled sound with "Champion Driver (1991)(Idea)[cr QTX][t +6 LGD].adf" if 1MB Chip RAM is used

Mind you, when using 1MB Chip RAM with the above crack the game will reset once after the Legend trainer then Quartex cracktro screen... Loads fine after though.

"Champion Driver (1991)(Idea)[cr QTX][t +8 D-Tect].adf" seems to be the better trained version to use as this doesn't happen

Clean crack of the game from the IPF in the zone.

I haven't checked for any further protection, just removed the doc check.

Nice one sir Galahad

...and obviously this crack works without garbled sound when using a standard "A500 - 1.3 ROM, OCS, 512 KB Chip + 512 KB Slow RAM" config

Here is a sheet for starting the SPS disk if anyone still needs it. Compare tracks (F5 J) and (, /). It's easy to pick wrong so double check.
