Copying Workbench install, Error Message!
Just out of interest, rather than solving a problem...
I installed Workbench 3.1 within WinUAE (Directory type), in windows explorer i copied the folder to a USB memory stick (along with WinUAE, roms and configs)... every was ok until the Worbench folder was copying across, it throws up a tick box stating that some information associated to the file can not be copied (there was over 100 instances) why? feel free to shout N00B! |

This occurs because the filesystem isn't capable of preserving the protection bits Amiga files have (executable, script, deletable, etc).

If you want to use WinUAE from the USB stick, make it a HDF instead. If you just use it to transfer the files, zip the Workbench folder.

No need for HDFs, protection flags and comments are kept, even on filesystem harddrives (since the beginning, where this myth comes from?)
Copy them inside emulation, not by using Windows tools if you want to keep protection flags and comments. EDIT: Explorer error comes because WinUAE uses NTFS file streams to keep the extra data which is not supported by FAT filesystems (WinUAE uses ugly __uaefsdb files on FAT volumes) |

Thanks for the info guys... If I use windows to copy and I lose protection flags and comments, would that corrupt workbench on the target system?
Basically I use a netbook, pc at home and pc at work.... I thought having a removable Amiga I can take anywhere and of course not have to update files on 3 systems (ie game saves)... Workbench is essentials for things like whdload |

I've done the same for a friend, put lots of workbench setups, games, etc on a 16gb USB stick, works a treat on any PC |

Use NTFS formatted media to transfer data. Then it is safe to move the files around using explorer without losing protection flags, comments or filename data if it contains illegal characters (which are stored in hidden alternate file streams)
Most WB files don't need special protection flag setup or comments but for example some whdload games have characters in file names that are illegal on Windows. (These file names are transformed to __uae<something> on Windows-side, emulated Amiga sees the original name) |
