Your problems will be nothing to do with the Seagate HD but the person who set it up. The mask, maxtrans etc will probably be set wrong for the drive and your suffering read/write probs due to this. I'll grab those links and try and help both of you out. |

I don't know if there is a misconfiguration, the same happens on my A600's WD but that one NEVER ended in a checksum error! I just have a supreme LOVE for WD drives. That's why I put one in my PC after busting up two other shitty ones.
No WD 2.5" 4GB drives fond on eBay :/ And the WD site has no mention about their 2.5" drives! Oh Drake. It's got to be a patch. My Amiga locks up the most when I have a badass WB loaded. When I boot without startup sequence, it's as solid as rock! |

Don't be so sure Akira! I may be wrong of course, but your Mask or Maxtransfer could be set wrong. Mask for instance, can depend on the type of memory accellerator you have! Read on......
Ok guys, prepare for some heavy reading! Ignore anything about creating a mount list - this is only required if you want to setup SFS on devices other than your HD. It's auto-mounted on HardDrives from the RDB (Rigid Disk Block). Main SFS Page. No longer updated - This has great info about SFS and advice on Maxtransfer and Mask settings for your HD. You'll also need to download the complete package and tools from this site. In simple terms, the Maxtransfer should be no bigger than your HD cache which is probably 128K. Buffers should be set at least to 100 for each partition with SFS for decent performance. Mask tells the HD controller what memory to use - read the site above for more details or have a read around the net. On my machine, I can use the least restrictive 0x7FFFFFFF no problem with the default A1200 IDE controller, a Seagate 1.28GB HD and 2MB chip 8MB fast on an expansion card. New updated SFS page - Here you can get the latest version of SFS. Only the filesystem is provided and needs dropping into the L directory replacing any older version. SFS guide - A very detailed text guide. I think it's also included in the package downloaded from the first link. Has more info on those detailed settings in Hdtoolbox – Mask, MaxTransfer, buffers etc. |

Great news Giana! Glad we could help.
Just a few notes about SFS: You can't use Reorg as it won't support SFS. No defrag utility will, but since SFS writes files very efficiently and effectively defrags itself (see readme) there is no need to worry about it. It will still out perform a reorganised FFS easily. Certain HD caching utilities should be avoided - again details are in the readme. Make sure you read it. I suggesting copying your WB install disk and placing SFS in the L directory. Then add all the SFS utils to the disk as well, deleting what you don't need in order to make room. Using HDtoolbox, you can then mount the SFS filesystem onto the Rigid Disk Block using this disk and run any diagnostic or recover utils should they be required. |

Well I'm glad you posted a link to the guide, because I couldn't find any instructions on the first page or the 2nd.

Thanks for the links Blood!!!
Defrag? What's that? I have NEVER defragged my WD A600 HD in 10 years It's not like the Amiga filesystem it's a mess like FAT32! |

Agreed. Defragging is a great idea, but it's rarely neccessary of the Amiga.

I use SFS on my A1200 HD and never had ANY checksum or read/write errors in two years now Even if I treat it bad, like turn off power while copying between partitions and so on

Well I'm convinced as well, but it probably won't be the weekend. Something about not getting around to it and not being that good at fiddling so I'm afraid to ruin something.
