Rendale pal genlock model no A8802

Have come across a Rendale pal genlock model no A8802 in a job lot of old amiga bits. Without sounding like a noob exactly what is it for and what does it do?

It allows you to overlay the Amiga picture on a video signal. So you could add subtitles, captions etc. to your holiday videos or whatever. Or do more ambitious things like create animations and have them play over the video signal. You can also fade between the external video and the Amiga picture. Or just watch Eastenders while you use Workbench.
