OMG!!!

I have been trying to think of name of this app for the last 15 years. I had it on a cover disk and then stuck it on my HDD so it would boot to the games menu and play algo music in the background.

Those were the days, .

It's a shame I'm no good at Java or I'd offer to assist!

A nightly binary build for SoundHelix is now available. Grab it here: http://www.soundhelix.com

There are some new example songs on YouTube as well: http://www.youtube.com/user/SoundHelix

Note: if you want to try out the example file (SoundHelix-Piano.xml) and you are using Windows 7 (and maybe also on Windows Vista), you need to change the referenced MIDI device name in the file from "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth" (which is the Windows XP name) to "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth". This is not yet mentioned in the README.

You can also use "Java Sound Synthesizer" (available on all platforms) as the MIDI device, but at least on Windows, you have to install a MIDI soundbank file before you can hear anything. See http://java.sun.com/products/java-me...oundbanks.html.

Downloading just now. Will report by the end of the day.

EDIT: Unfortunantely this was the result:

Code:
C:\Users\xpect\Documents\1\Soundhelix\soundhelix>java -jar SoundHelix.jar
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.RuntimeException: Configuration file "Sound
Helix.xml" doesn't exist
        at com.soundhelix.SoundHelix.main(SoundHelix.java:84)

C:\Users\xpect\Documents\1\Soundhelix\soundhelix>pause
Press any key to continue . . .

Run it with "examples/SoundHelix-Piano.xml" as the first parameter behind "SoundHelix.jar".

BTW: I've uploaded a new version to SourceForge.

A question: Do AlgoMusic and SoundHelix incorporate fractal algorithms?

If they can be hosted, a Java Webstart and/or Applet version of SoundHelix would be ideal to send to friends in a link!

You'll be amazed at how many otherwise intelligent people don't know how to extract a ZIP file.
Pre-recorded YouTube vids also don't have the same magic as actually generating tunes

Also, small point: How about a patch for AlgoMusic for AmigaOS 3.9? Or perhaps someone else could patch it.

I like the applet idea! I've set up a Java Webstart file, which should be able to launch SoundHelix directly from the browser. Please have a try:

http://www.soundhelix.com/applet/SoundHelix-applet.jnlp

Note that you currently can't change anything in the applet. If you want to modify any of the configuration, you need to download the latest binary package at http://www.soundhelix.com/ and is that instead of the applet.

Same here

A true applet embeddable in HTML would be nice though - especially if it can be hosted and made embeddable on external websites (this may also require a small GUI).

Then people could add a live SoundHelix player to their MySpace or whatever.

Cool...

I'm working on a "real" applet. So stay tuned, it might be around soon.

I just went through my old Amiga disks and found I had thrown out almost all of my Amiga Format subscriber's disks.

Looks like the only one I decided to keep was the one with AlgoMusic.

Any chance of upping an ADF of it to the zone?
