Screeching disks
My mate called down tonight with loads of boxed games that are screeching, can they be saved or are they only fit for the bin?

Try cleaning them with isopropyl alcohol. Also the floppy drive read/write headstoo, which may have now been contaminated by those floppy disks.

What causes them to screech? My thinking is isopropyl alcohol will damage them more?? I'm a complete noob though.

Mould or fungus on the disk surface will cause the drive to screech. As will deterioration of the disk surface which causes the magnetic coating to rub off on the disk heads.
Neither case is a healthy one for the drive, and disks like that demand a extremely good clean or just binning! |

It's always sad to see disks and Amiga stuff go fubar!
You could try cleaning the disks first to see if it cures them, if you do attempt it watch for the coating coming off the disk surface, if that happens the disk is beyond all help and you know to bin it! |

Don't bin them! If they are original disks you could always replace the media inside them.
If you don't want them then sell them on eBay - people do want and buy original disks, even non working ones. |

They're in their boxes so they should be valuable to someone. Its weird how they have all failed at the same time while stored inside their individual boxes in an attic.

Make sure your floppy drive is also cleaned. Mold/muck from the floppy disks may have contaminated the read/write heads, so any subsequent floppy disk will also fail to be read.

Do not bin any original boxed discs. They are very valued for their boxes, no matter if discs themselves are working.

Yeah don't chuck them away. Let someone else have them that knows how to repair them, or clean and repair them yourselves.
