High Density floppy disk in 4000T

I am setting up my 4000T.

The model of the floppy drive says its 1,4mb HD floppy drive.

But in WB 3.1 when I goto format the disk it say only 880k

Does that mean I cant use HD disks
Thanks!

If your Amiga recognizes the floppy drive as high density, it will offer you an option to format the disk to 1760kB. If not, then it will only offer the 880kB format option.

If you have a high density Amiga floppy drive and you have 3.1 Kickstart ROMs, then this will be automatic.

Thus, it appears that, although your Amiga is equipped with a high density floppy drive unit, it has not been modified to give it the characteristics necessary to switch to 150rpm rotation speed for compatibility with high density disks in the Amiga.

This Sony MPF920 E/131 high density floppy drive has been modified to switch to 150rpm rotation speed for compatibility with high density disks in the Amiga:

The PLCC chip which has been glued to the chassis top-down is the key to adding this compatibility.

That picture, and the discussion which accompanies it, appears in this thread:

Ok, neither of those will support HD disks without extensive modifications.

Unfortunately no-one's really made a silver bullet solution for getting various "PC" drives to work as Amiga high density drives, so the easy solutions are either to find yourself a Chinon FZ-357A or stick to DD floppies and use your existing drives.
