What's in your toolbox ?

I'm curious ... which tools and utilities have you used the last 25-30 years? and what's the purpose of it.

Me ? I just got back...
Last time I put my hands on an Amiga was when Marauder II and CLIMate was King and Queen of the hill and CLI scripting was nerdy as h*ll

Ok, I'll play along...

My toolbox begins and ends with Dopus 4.12 - as without it my experience of the Amiga may still be based on games. I use it almost daily - even now! Other tools I use:

. HDInstTools / HDToolBox - for creating and editing hard drive partitions.
. ReloKick - for degrading to Kickstart 1.3 (now built into WHDLoad)
. Quickgrab - for ripping screenshots
. MCP - a general 'upgrade' tool and hack for WB - updates and fixes a lot of things.
. TUDE / JST / WHDLoad - for running games from the HD
. Disksalv 4 and Quarterback Tools - the best disk recovery tools availavble
. MUI - Magic user interface - for running MUI apps like IBrowse, Yam.
. NewIcons - Full colour icon patch with examples
. ModePro - select your screenmode from all available, with hacks
. Colourpatch - tweek the colour pallete, brightness, contrast, and gamma
. Zap / NewZap / Zaphod - simple HEX editors for programs
. Snoopdos 3 (essential!) - for tracking the flow of files, monitoring whats being copied/executed etc, and where
. Iconian - a simple icon editor, better than WB
. System Prefs Editor 3.8 - To turn on/off CPU caches, data burst, data cashes on 020+ machines
. KME - a Keymap editor
. X-copy Pro 10 - duh
. PrintManager 37.9 - an improved print spool tool for WB2+
. TinyMeter - shows how much space is left on your disks via a tiny meter
. ClassAct - like MUI, enables certain 'class act' programs to run.
. Visual Prefs - update to several prefs features.
. Power Snap - hold down the 'alt' key to cut and copy any text, alt + rightclick to paste it. Better than CTRL+C.
. Flipside - brings up windows from behind each other when the pointer hovers over them
. WBGauge - another handy HDD 'free space' indicator tool
. ADF Blitzer - create and do things with ADFs (amiga disk files)
. Tools Deamon - adds options to the pull-down menus on the top of the WB screen, useful for lauching progs
. Heddley - a very easy AmigaGuide editor

Not much in the way of graphics patches like Copperlist backgrounds and such, but there you go.

No Anti-Virus ?

Anything wrong with Dopus 4.16 ? http://dopus.free.fr/ (In some palces, out there on ta' internet you'll find plenty of places to DL Dopus from. BUT most of them doesn't have dopus.library - this link gives you the whole package).

Few of my faves:

1. "ReSource" - Disassembling. Naturally

2. "CodeProbe" - (Part of the SAS/C) package for debugging.
3. "Scout" - Indispensible for checking system tables/lists on the fly
3. "Hunk Processor" by Thomas Richter - for removing debug hunks from executables, editing MEM load flags etc. (is there a later version than 2.14 anyone?)

Any chance you could update your post with a few words next to each util to say what they're used for? Some I know, but others I don't.

The list would be useful for people like myself who can then go off and investigate further.

@ all: The idea behind this thread was to get as much info as possible and in such a way that all who read the thread would be able to learn as much as possible without having to jump around in the entire forum for exactly this kind of info. (Versions etc. etc.).

It is also quite interresting to know what KS and WB is used and any addons to the system as a whole as well

I also didn't recognize a couple of the programs but I easily found them on Aminet and was able to read about them and also download the ones I wanted to try.

I used DOpus many years ago. I believe it was 4.12. I purchased it along with it's gigantic manual. I had a computing buddy over one day probably 20 years ago and he turned me on to DiskMaster2. It was faster and easier to use and set-up and I started using it and have never looked back. When installing a new OS on an Amiga it is the first program after the initial install that goes on the HD.

Right dannyp1, that's exactly how I do it with my Window$ setup ... OS first and then Total Commander 7.56. Without that I'm lost.

Started using TC v0.x0 (0.60 I think) after Norton faild to 'port' Norton Commander to WfW back in those days

Ha ha, no anti-virus. The chances of getting an Amiga virus these days is virtually zero, especially if you stick to WHDownload games and aminet apps.

4.12 was the last 'authentic' release before they made v5. I got the full package from one of CU Amigas cover disks. 4.16 is a fan update and is faster but not as stable when copying many hundreds of files together. The version of 4.16 I used to have was optimised for the 020 - but 4.12 is compatable with everything - even KS 1.2!

Oh, as a new commer to The Aniga Scene again after SO many years being away, I didn't know this about Dopus - Thanks for the information on this

I'll see if I can hunt down that cover disk you mentioned among the 600+ cover disks I have on the shelf behind me

When it comes to AntiVirus protection - Its vital for me because I have 5000+ disks on the shelf and I do not know what is on them and I do not trust what it says on the label on them. THEREFORE AntiVirus is important to me. The thing is, I don't know which one to use, as there is a lot to pick from. Right now I'm using VirusChecker 6.15 by John Veldthuis, I found it with the first lot I bought.
