Actually most A600s didn't come with the top shield installed. There are only a few that had the shield so that yours is missing its shield doesn't mean much.

If you get a 1MB upgrade for A600 you can play just about anything. There used to be lots of WHDload slaves which slowed down on vanilla A600 (and presumably A500) but I reported lots and lots and the various slave owners have fixed most of them.
