A3000 hangs when hydra amiganet brought online

I'm having a perplexing problem on my A3000D (2mb/8mb), and I'm having trouble figuring it out.

I have a Hydra Systems AmigaNet v1.1 board, jumpered for 10base5, with an AUI-TP transceiver attached to it, installed in the bottom slot of my A3000. Using Miami, I can query the board (hydra unit 0) for it's MAC, and this works, thus telling me that the A3000 sees the board. But, when I define an interface, and activate it, the A3000 freezes hard, requiring a power-cycle. I've watched my DHCP logs, and this happens just after the A3000 is offered an IP address, if Miami is set for DHCP.

I've tried switching to AmiTCP 3.0b2, thinking that it might be the TCP stack, but AmiTCP also hangs similarly.

Amy ideas?

Thanks!

Jope,

Thanks for the pointer. I'll try running enforcer, but I have little experience with machine-level debugging. Hopefully it will spit out something obvious.

Since I made the original post, I have read a number of people's comments on the buster 9 that comes installed in the A3000. Do you know if the AmigaNet board uses Zorro II DMA? And, if so, should I upgrade to super buster 11?

Thanks!

And a second update...I installed a clean, fresh OS 3.1 copy on a new HDD, with a new copy of Miami.

I get the same crash. I'm really starting to suspect either:

a) I need Super Buster 11
b) My AmigaNet board is bad

Any ideas which?

Thanks!

Enforcer is not for debugging this time, but for disabling caching on the memory area where the Hydra is.

Just start Enforcer up, try your TCP/IP stack and see if it starts working.

Buster doesn't affect Z2 DMA.

There is a fix to the hydra card, involves cutting a few traces and soldering two wires, but I can't remember details.

It's not a very good card tbh, I sold mine because it was so unstable.

Well, no such luck. I started Enforcer, and then activated Miami. Still the same hang, when the card receives the DHCP reply, or when, in static IP mode, the card tries to bring up the interface.

Any other advice, other than just to sell the card, and get something different?

Thanks for the help!

By the way, I also verified that Enforcer is running correctly, by using lawbreaker. It had occurred to me that I might be misusing it, but no such luck.

Thanks!

Did you use this driver? http://aminet.net/package/driver/net/HydraDriver144

rkauer,

I used this driver:

http://hardware.amiga.hu/install/Hydra_25.dms

I've also tried using the MNI driver that comes with miami (z2-8390.mni). Both produce hangs.

I'll try the driver that you pointed to.

Ah, well. Same crash as before.

Is it just that my network card is broken? I ordered a Deneb USB card, so when it arrives, I guess I can get a USB-ethernet device.

Any other suggestions would be welcome, though.

I saw some people messing with the jumpers on the board. Although you need to put or remove all of them at the same time.

If no avail, sell it to an A2000 owner, which will be happy using it.

Yes, pass on all your crap to the poor A2000 owners, we should revolt against you 3000 / 4000 users

After you get over the initial woes, Amigakit do a good card, their Easynet.

If you get stuck on that one, ask me how.

I know that I'll happy enough using even this crappy card instead an A2286/A2086 with an ISA 3Com plugged.

Less tinkering and power consumption and more room inside for other nice boards (graphics, for example).

Anyone have this fix for the locking up of the Hydra card? I am having this issue on my A4000 too. I noticed if I unplug the cable and plug it back in it resets and works again for a minute or so, then the internet locks back up.

I don't remember exact symptoms anymore, but maybe it's the same which this fix is for:
http://jpv.wmhost.com/files/hydra_amiganet11_fix.txt

If any suspects about TCP/IP stack configuration, you could try with this network boot disk, which should work fine with Hydras:
