Oh gotta be great if you own a CD32 Pad. Not my case though

To be quite honest, I find the game very playable with switching weapons anyway. I guess that's because that's how I learned to play it, since the first version I played and finished was the Amiga one

I'm pretty sure there's another version of Desert Strike, it's unreleased but who knows, maybe we will see it some time next year...

Sadly, I never completed Desert Strike on an Amiga. I did finish the game on Genesis back in 2005, of course with use of cheat. Lame gamer here ...

It wasn't an easy game, I remember the last level was a friggin nightmare and I had to retry it many many many times. The Dog peeing at the end sequence was a really nice touch

But it's the only game on the series I finished.

I remember when I first saw the game I was really gobsmacked by it, loved it to bits. None of the sequels had the same impact as the first game on me.

I've had a sudden urge today to replay this series from scratch. The "best version" search landed me in this thread. After switching back and forth between Amiga and Megadrive versions of Desert Strike for the last hour or so, I'd say that MD comes out on top for me. Yep, Amiga's presentation is significantly better, fx and gfx wise, but MD has vastly superior scrolling, and in this game it's really something you notice all the time. Even when I force NTSC on Amiga, it's still pretty bad.

Additionally, the chopper handling feels better and more responsive on the MD too, and being fully full screen doesn't hurt either.

I just did take a look at both Megadrive and Amiga again.

The loading times were no problem for me, as I had an HD installed version (don't know who made this back then, pre-whdload era).

Sound + presentation is much better on the Amiga version IMO. The Megadrive rotors sound really doesn't fit. And you hear it all the time. This really throws me off.

The handling and responsiveness I really don't see as "Plus" on the Megadrive side. The helicoper moves ridiculously fast. How fast it turns, and the acceleration when flying forward and backward. Never seen a helicopter move like that.
I really rather like the Amiga version's approach, which seems more realistic to me.

Of course in the end it's a matter of taste.

This is the Strike series, not Gunship It's supposed to be fast and fluid arcadey fun. Amiga version simply seems to be hardware-limited regarding scrolling + control, though it does shine in other departments.

It's your opinion that it's supposed to be faster . "Arcadey" are games like "Twin Cobra", with those I understand the need for very fast action.

Desert Strike doesn't fit that category IMO.

But, ok, this is eab, so I'm used to bizarre rationalizations. This time it's "realizm"...all right then

Of course I would prefer 50fps scrolling in Desert Strike. But you know that Amiga gamers didn't receive that in most cases and still like many of the 25fps games .

That said looking at the Amiga version I don't find the scrolling as lacking as you do. It's mostly not jerky or something (as not-jerky as 25fps can be ), but in general just slower as the Megadrive version.

Why is the scrolling slower ? Because the helicopter flies slower, and reacts slower on accelerating, decelerating, turning.
Which I really like, as it is a helicopter ! It's no futuristic space shuttle, UFO or supersonic aircraft.

I don't need Gunship realism, but a proper behaviour I definitely prefer. You have a different opinion, which is ok.

Don't know why you need to brush off another opinion as "bizarre rationalizations", but if you need to make clear that your opinion is the only valid...be my guest

@alexh:
Desert Strike / Jungle Strike for me.
Zeewolf is interesting, but overall I found it rather boring.

i love Desert Strike Amiga
one of the few games i managed to complete without cheat back in the day
hard but imo doable

the only thing i cannot reach to master is the mouse control
you can set also the mouse in options to control the helicopter
but... well seems something not right with that one
