After many tests I can confirm that's MUCH better to insert/extract the CF only (leaving the PCMCIA adapter) .
The only issue I found on my A600 is that sometimes/often, when I extract the CF or the adapter+CF, the related icon on the desktop doesn't disappear, and I can open it with double click finding it empty...

You can use above 4GB with an SHDC->CF adapter. I've had good results with those.
