Is there anything you miss in current gen OS that you had in Workbench?

DOpus Megellan is still my favorite file manager.

I miss the UI concept of the menu being hidden until I press the right mouse button. The Mac in particular would benefit from such a feature.

I was fixing my Steam games, again, and there is ONE major thing I miss about older OS:

Not needing massive GBs of data storage space just for the flipping OS! Seriously....

Windows OS, direct X, drivers should not be around 20-30 GB of crap... Even 1 GB is too much...

You can install RAMDISK on PC. I do and use it for ALL my temp storage to and from the OS (Windows). Total Amiga thing!

This is a disk cache, nothing to do with amiga's ram disk.

I have Windows setup to create a 4 GB RAMDISK (I have 32GB total), and my Windows "temp" folder has been Symbolic Linked to that RAMDISK via Junction Link Magic:

Here is my windows CMD file for creating that RAMDISK with other "temp" and "tmp" folders for various applications that I run regularly:

imdisk -a -s 4096M -m W: -p "/fs:ntfs /q /y"
mkdir w:\cache
mkdir w:\downloading
mkdir w:\downloads
mkdir w:\objects
mkdir w:\temp
copy e:\applications\7zip_ccd_start.bat w:\

copy the above content into a text file, save it and rename extension to imdisk-start.cmd or whatever. But you must have the cmd extension so it acts like an application.

create this file imdisk-kill.cmd to remove the ramdisk if you need all your ram back:

imdisk -D -m w:

the w: is my assigned RAMDISK.

You can choose whatever letter you want. I keep XYZ for other drive assigns.

You can change the 4096M to whatever size you want. Each 1GB = 1024 megabytes so calculate it. I have a bunch of these files for different temporary RAMDRIVES.

PS: If you LOGOUT of Windows, then LOG back in, the RAMDRIVE and all contents are all there. On my PC, even if it goes into SLEEP mode, all the content are still there.

Only if you turn it off or reboot, does the RAMDRIVE go away.

You can see I copy a temp file to the RAMDRIVE that runs 7zip on all archives as before I copy the final file to my HDD. So you can copy temp utilities to do batch operations in your RAMDRIVE this way.

To set the RAMDRIVE to be created on bootup into Windows 7, put a shortcut to the file into your STARTUP folder.

Or you can set services to load it.

I also have WinUAE mapped an Amiga OS "drive" to the RAMDRIVE directory as a shared folder between PC and UAE. Works fantastic.

PS: You can thank the ARMA community for all this info as they were trying to figure out how to speed up that old game BEFORE SSDs came out!!!

To be honest, I read the other comments and I either can't quite understand most of them, or I'm actually happy they are gone. What are the benefits of a ramdisk, for example? Volumes/assigns I still can't quite grasp, it seems so much simpler on Win regarding file structure. Or, the windows to front thing - when I click on a window, I usually want to see its contents...

Guess I'm not power user enough The other thing is, I hardly use any functions of Windows on my PC. My main "desktop" = Total Commander.

If you want dynamic ramdisk then mount ramfs instead of tmpfs what is very similar to Amiga ramdisk.

I miss having a spatial file manager where I can easily have multiple drawers open without having to do right-click and select over and over and over and over again.

A few more:
Tooltypes (and their commandline counterparts) - for quick configuration.
Snapshotting - positions of icons and windows don't permanently change unless you tell them to.
Startup-sequence - understand/control *everything* your system does in booting up.


Related thought:
Does the Amiga somehow still have the most modern partition/device arrangement? e.g., we can name partitions whatever we want (DH0:, HD2:, MyStuff12: ), position them anywhere in the drive geometry, also access them via a completely different user-set volume name, and know that those names will remain permanently unless we alter them. Windows is still tied to the ancient CPM-derived C:, D:, etc. drive letter naming scheme (volume names are for decoration only). The Unix-like OSes still use the even-more-braindead 1960s/1970s convention of /dev/disknumber/partitionnumber. If you move the disk to another computer or to another controller (or insert a removable drive after bootup instead of before bootup) then the completely arbitrary disknumber changes; if you split or consolidate partitions on a disk, then the arbitrary partitionnumber of all the following partitions changes. Lunacy! MacOS at least has a volume-name scheme overlaid on top (is it just /mnt in disguise?) but it's still very clunky compared to the Amiga. (Not sure how the current Linuxes/BSDs/etc. handle volume names, but I imagine it can't be much better.)

To be fair, the OS has had this functionality included since OS 3.9. You can specify an icon, and a matching program to open it with, for any file without its own specific icon, and files can be identified by their extension or file header.
