I pretty much built my chess skills at such an early age because of this awesome game.

It is a masterpiece, indeed, one of the games that I always return to. I am sure even people that hate chess will enjoy it.

I enjoyed it most definitely, but I played the faster PC version when I could (IF it had a soundblaster of course).

And I also enjoyed Battle Chess 2 a lot, it was so different

I do enjoy it and think some of the animations are quite clever, but never understood why the animations ran so slowly on the Amiga.

Was a very nice idea back then.
Many people just played it because they wanted to see the Knight chopping off body parts..

I did not enjoy it, as I never took the time to learn chess. Looking at it now, it seems agonizingly slow.. I'd prefer for the moves to happen instantly.

I know the rules to play chess - but I don't like it. So like many others I just played Battle Chess to see those cool animations. In fact it was one of the first Amiga games that I saw and of course it was jaw-dropping (coming from a C64).

The graphics look really good. Very nice art style..
I often feel that early Amiga game graphics had a better art style than later ones.

@Jope:

You can play it in 2D mode; the only delay will be while the computer thinks.

It's a shame no one was able to hack the game to speed up during thinking time....

Sounds good. Perhaps I'll take the time to learn some chess strategy one day. I sorta know how the pieces move. :-)

okay but then you might as well play any other chess game, the charm of Battle Chess is to see cartoony blood and guts

The only reason why I keep away from this title is the speed of the thinking time. Without the long waiting times battlechess would be an amazing game to this day and beyond.

The minimum thinking time is 1 minute. At least you can set time in minutes.

Used to play Battle Chess at school on RM Nimbus 186 PCs (yes 186..) with CGA graphics. It would kill the network. I think the server had a 40Mb drive for 2 classrooms. Still fun!

If you add the optional Zorro III Quantum Computer board to your big box Amiga then Battle Chess thinking is instantaneous.

I liked it.

I recently saw a youtube video where an Amiga 500 running Battle Chess is put against a modern IMac (each one having the "player moves" that the other computer's AI decided). Surprisingly, Amiga 500 fought bravely and the match was quite a challenge.
