amigakit pcmcia wifi card

Im about to install the wifi card into my A1200, it has an aca1221ec with 8mb ram, how safe and secure is the software that drives it? Is there a firewall, how does it respond to port probes etc, can i just set it and forget it once its connected to the wifi network?

What sort of a card have you got? Does it have a white edge connector?

Where are you going to use it? If you connect to your private router, it acts like a firewall itself and nothing is needed in softwarewise.

Does it look like Orinoco Gold card? If so, your only option is WEP or WPA/TKIP.

Set your router into WPA/TKIP mode - B/G or B/G/N at first. Install the prism2v2 drivers and try to associate with your router.
Here are the prism2v2 drivers: http://aminet.net/package/driver/net/prism2v2

It looks like this but without the black chunk on the end, is something missing if that isnt there? on amikit it says wep/wpa. this makes it useless to me.

The black chunk on the end is the antenna.

Does it look similar to this one?

If you need a WPA2/AES PCMCIA card then have a look here:

New pcmcia card

ive got a new card that supports wpa2 but will installing the drivers slow my 1200 down? the cpu runs at 17mhz (aca1221ec). If boot times are slower i might not use it.

What I usually do is to have a script. Because running a WIFI card in Amiga take in two stages.
1. Assosciation with your router
2. Connection with your TCP/IP stack

I use a Roadshow TCP/IP stack and run WirelessManager manager whenever I need the card to use it and same goes with the TCP/IP stack. You don't want or need your Amiga to be online all the time.

I suspect a lot has to do with your Amiga set up than the card itself. The ability to process the data being receive and sent requires more than just what the WiFi card is capable of delivering: it requires CPU, RAM and HDD capabilities.

For example, there was a time when my broadband speed was actually faster than what my laptop could handle natively in transfer - suffice to say the laptop had periods where it would start to become incredibly slow and would have to 'catch up'.

I'd imagine that wifi cards would require greater processing power than ethernet cards... I use a ethernet card for my A600 and it seems fast enough for what I need. It also works wireless with my current router which is higher encryption than what WiFi cards that work on Amiga would allow (or at least not have the hassle to flash / configure them) - I simply connect it to a WiFi bridge! Best of both worlds: wired when I need, wireless when I need and no need to change anything on the Amiga side!

What other hardware in your Amiga?

70000 CPS = 560 Kbps = 0.5 Mpbs.
