Installing games

OMG. its been 30 something years since I've used my Amiga 2000!!!

Can someone remind me how to transfer a game or any program from floppy to a hard drive.

Do you disk copy, file copy, or must they have an installer?

Do you make a directory/folder to copy the program into?

A few programs I have copied keep asking for the original disk or a particular file that I cannot find.

Do you need to worry about one program overwriting a file from another program?

Thanks

If the game is OS friendly and not 'trackloaded/protected/etc.', most of the time, copying it to a folder on your HD and making some 'assign' will be enough to enjoy (example of Adventures games : Indiana Jones, Monkey Island, Fables and Fiends, Simon the Sorcerer, Loom, etc.). Check if the 1st floppy contains an installer as well. The Faery Tale Adventure, Sierra's games, can also be intalled.
For others, WHDLoad will be your friend (but does not work with KS/OS 1.3).

Here is an example (WB1.3 but work also with 2+) :

- boot to WB
- insert "The Faery Tale Adventure" floppy in df0:
- open a Shell and type :
makedir sys:FTA
copy sys:system.info sys:FTA.info
copy sys:Shell.info sys:FTA/ClickMe.info
cd sys:FTA
copy df0: "" all clone
ed ClickMe

- type
assign PROGDIR: sys:FTA
cd PROGDIR:
assign FONTS: PROGDIR:Fonts
echo "*n*n*nlet's start the fun *n*n*n"
fmain
assign FONTS: sys:Fonts

- press 'ESC', then 'x', then 'RETURN'

- with the mouse open the FTA folder
- click once on the ClickMe icon
- open the 'Info' dialog box (menu Workbench)
- in the 'stack' field, input : 4096 and press 'RETURN'
- change 'default tool' to C:IconX and press 'RETURN'
- DEL any 'tool types'
- ADD the following 'tool type' :
WINDOW=CON:0/0/320/200/The Faery Tale Adventure
- click on Save

Now you just need to "Double click" the 'ClickMe' icon to play the game

Adapt the path(s), folder(s) name(s) to your needs.

in general on Hardisk you can copy this type of games:

1) those that have an installer
2) for some AmigaDOS games you can create a directory and copy all the files
2a) Some of them require an assign in User-Startup or you can made a script

Some games change hardware requirement after installed on Hardisk: some games that in floppy disk require kick 1.3, after installation require kick 2.0x. Some games from floppy require 1 MB RAM, after installation require 1 MB Chip RAM or more. In these cases, however, the manuals have any informations about this change of requirement.

Thanks to everyone for your help.

I'm in the process of "resurrecting" my Amiga 2000, Commodore 64, and SX-64.
Having to relearn things long forgotten.
