AROS info needed

I have been reading about AROS, as far as i understand it is a replacement OS for the amiga. What I would like to know is do i need a PPC to make this work? and do I have to install it on a HDF file? oh and how much space do I need?

Replacement OS for amiga, sort of but maybe one day.

It runs primarily on x86 hardware but also on m68k, PPC and x86_64.

It can be installed to HD but also booted directly from CD/DVD or installed to a USB key.

Space depends on which distribution (and how much software they come with) that you install.

Nightly Builds CD, upto a couple hundred MB
Icaros 1.3 DVD nearly 2 GB
Icaros 1.3 light 700 MB
(there are 2 more distros not listed.)

so, what ur sayin s that it maybe incompatiple with WinUAE? I am only using WinUAE on an Acer laptop, I am saving to get a secondhand tower PC, I do not have a PPC board on my current setup. and if it is sort of a replacement OS, what exactly is it? any details?

WinUAE is an Amiga emulator for Windows, AROS is an OS itself : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AROS_Re...erating_System

Best to download Icaros light and boot from the cd to try it out. Aros comes with its own emulators for the Amiga such as, Janus, e-uae to name a couple.

I want to try it from USB. I've downloaded Icaros 1.2.2 http://www.icarosdesktop.com/updates...CD_120-122.tgz
I've prepared a 16Gb Kingston pendrive:

"Format the thumb drive
1.from a DOS prompt execute: diskpart
2.list disk
3.select disk 1 (assuming disk 1 was your thumb drive in the above list disk command)
4.clean
5.create partition primary
6.select partition 1
7.active
8.format fs=fat32
9.assign
10.exit

Copy the Win2008 install files
1.xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\ (assumes your dvd is drive D: and your thumb drive is drive E:\, adjust accordingly)

That’s all it took other than verifying the server BIOS was set to boot off of the USB device."

I've done a DVD with the Iso of Icaros. Now I'm copying the contents in my pendrive (resting 6 hours, 23 minutes) Edit (suddenly now it's 3 hours) (Edit now 1 hour). Perhaps I'm downloading an old version, I'm seeing now (will try with updates http://www.icarosdesktop.org/), but... Will it work?

EDIT: It seems my version is the latest to work with USB ¿?. Sadly the pdf instructions don't open:

EDIT: I will try with Icaros 1.3 the same way. I can go backwards if it doesn't work. I will leave it installing while I sleep...

Bit of an overkill there Retrofan. Just boot from the cd/dvd and let the installer prepare the usb stick.

Where did you get the info on using diskpart? It seems to be a powerful tool for prepping USB devices, etc., but without instructions I've never been able to get past the DISKPART> prompt.

Google is your friend, you do the same for setting up a win install stick.
I also used this method for installing aros on a stick.

You can't install AROS to a USB drive that way (the drive needs to be SFS formatted, not FAT32). Instead, boot from the DVD and run the installer that can be found on the desktop.

@DeafDaz

You can burn an AROS CD/DVD and boot your Acer laptop from it. Some hardware components might not work with AROS however.

If anyone else is having trouble reading the pdf from the web site you can
Right click on the pdf link and save it to your PC, then you should be able to open it from there.

My Acer laptop lacks any CD/DVD drives. So how would I install AROS on that, is there some way to boot from an ISO file? Or would I perhaps be able to run it inside Windows by using an IBM emulator such as DOSBox?

Do you wish to simply run it inside windows? ... then you can use vmware or qemu which comes in the icaros download.

Or run it inside windows then install it from inside windows? Dont think so?

You could also try a USB CD-ROM drive, or install to USB Stick using another computer with a rom.

You could use a program from pendrivelinux.com that creates a bootable USB stick and also allows you to install an iso image and boot from it from the menu.

I personally use Yumi and have booted icarus light 1.26 from usb.

I've installed using a external USB DVD, Aros can't boot from a FAT USB pendrive like linux. I have an Acer Aspire One, but in the Icaros Desktop manual you can find how to install into a USB using VMWARE. Download it from http://www.icarosdesktop.org

Also there is a Aspire One focused AROS, called ASPIREOS https://sites.google.com/site/arosas...e/installation

Neat, ill have to remember that one. Installing from my laptops CD drive is like using a floppy, makes the same noises and take just as long!

Not True, I have a dual booting Fat USB pendrive with parted magic and Aros on it, it's all down to the syslinux bootloader.
