So what does the SPS Analyser call this Rob Northern protection, if it has a name that is?

the only common name theme inside the encryption is "Protect Process", which presumably was to name the process in a CLi window as the protection ran.

As good a name as any.

@Agilent: Lol, you funny guy

@Galahad/FLT: I wondered if it would have some 'official' name that Rob used to identify it, like Copylock was known by, so for now it's dubbed 'Rob Northern Protect Process'

Nope, this was before Copylock and right at the start of his Amiga career, theres certainly nothing else in there to give it a name, either because he knew how easy it was to defeat and thus didn't want to really put his name to it.

That's pretty lame hiding the executable as mathtrans.library.

Lame it maybe to some but unless you knew what it was then it served it's purpose, plus it's encrypted so not directly executable.

Seems 'HotShot' may be another early Rob Northern protection, the game is mentioned in Codetappers Rob Northern interview, at least I can't make a working IPF in Disk-Utilities! My copy has a longtrack on 0.1 and seems to load/check from 70-68 before jumping to track 0 and sticking there, or is just Ben Herndon HLS?

Did you get chance to check that CT RAW yet Denis?

I also have Manhattan Dealers and that appears to be early Rob Northern too!

Its an early Rob Northen, same style decryption loops.

Feel free to upload MD if you have it.

MD was 1988 so the disk label says, but HOL lists its release as 1989, copylock was born in 1988 wasn't it so this protection was probably the last one before copylock? Hotshot and Barbarian were also released in 1988 so what was the FIRST true copylock game?

@Denis: Was that HotShot or Manhattan Dealers

I have modified my answer above. The RN Series is pre-copylock.

Love to know why you think they are different sector size when they are the same

Because if i try to encode hot shot with the same RN version as MD, it doesn't work.

The protection use 11 sectors on MD and 12 on Hot shot

Hot shot use a variant of RN1 labelled RN1a.
