Programming Environments, etc.

Can I ask what programming environments (apart from Basic) exist for use in programming?

I bought an old A500 and it has no disks, I am waiting on some to arrive in the post, one of them has Basic 1.3 on it.

Once I have taught my son the basics of BASIC programming, what if any options exist at a higher level and what are the names please.

The other main options language-wise would be the assembly and C languages. Technically speaking they are lower level than BASIC, however (that is to say they operate closer to the hardware). There are also many varieties of BASIC, most much better than the official AmigaBASIC.

On a higher level there are scripting languages such as ARexx, and others.

A floppy-only A500 imposes some limits on available options. Maybe have a look at [ Show youtube player ].

After basic, I'd say something like Modula-2, Pascal or Amiga E could be some interesting options, if you don't want to go 'closer to the hw' as ajk mentioned.

Skip AmigaBasic and jump into AMOS. It's a perfect language and environment for youngsters, and there is even an Easy AMOS for those first steps in programming.
