Hard Drive Problem !!!

Any idea why the hell i can't get this secondary drive
working on my A1500 ?

Bought a Seagate Model no. ST32272N 50 pin scsi 21.gig hard drive and 5 way scsi cable....

Even when i take out my primary drive and replace this with
the other one....and try to prep it with GVP's software,it brings
up the name of the drive but hashes out heads, cylinders etc.

So i can't do any thing with it....

What am i doing wrong ?

Any help would be much appreciated

Do you mean a 2.1GB or is this really a 21GB SCSI drive?

I'm thinking a 2.1GB so here are soem things to try.

1) Make sure that each device has it's own unique SCSI ID number, normally device 0~6 are for SCSI-I and II controllers and device 0~15 for SCSI-III and above controllers. device 7 is normally reserved for the host adapter itself so don't jumper the drive for this number!!!

2) Check for the Terminators on both the controller and the drive, normally only the last device in the chain needs to be terminated, i.e., the drives/deviced in the middle of the cable don't and shouldn't be terminated as this will cause signal problems.

3) If you are using WB 2.00+ should have come with the HD Toolbox, see if this can read and display the correct drive info.

Well, this is all I can think of for now, let us know what happens.

Thanks for the comments....

Yes.....2.1 gig....sorry......hehe

If i have a 5 way cable.....but only two devices to connect, does the last device (which has to be terminated)have to be on the end of the cable or not ?

If you use a terminator on the cable then I would locate the last device on the chain nearest that terminator, so yes it would be connected to the last connector on the cable. So I have to ask if you are using a cable with a terminator on the end or the terminators on the drive itself?

You should use only one set of terminators, either the one on the cable or the drive!!!

Please let me know, thanks

This looks like a normal scsi transfer cable to me....what would
one look like with terminators on it ?

The hard drive that is the amiga already doesn't seem to
have a jumper for the terminator on it.......but the drive i
has just bought has a jumper for the drive to be terminated.

The new drive also has these options as well,

Term.power from drive ?
Term.power to scsi bus ?
Term.power from scsi bus ?

thanks

A SCSI cable with a terminator on it actually has what looks like a black or gray plug connected to the end of the cable, this I've only seen on the 68-pin SCSI-III cables!!! If you are using the older 50-pin ribbon cable this will not be present!!! However somebody may have come out with some so if this looks just like a stock cable with connectors only then be assured there is no terminator on the cable!!!

Now as for the jumpers on the new drive, try the term power from drive first then the others in turn, be sure to power down between each jumper setting change!

Also double check the SCSI ID settings, make sure to set the old drive for ID = 0 then the new drive ID = 1. The only reason I say this is that it's easier to keep track of as the controller should be assigned ID = 7 already

hmmmm.....it seems when both the drives are connected at the same time that it fails to reconise the second drive at all.

If i unplug the first drive (old one) and just leave the second drive (new one)plugged in,the gvp installation disk finds it on scsi id=0
even though i put it on id=1 !!

But it wont let me do anything to the drive....it brings up name, model number of drive.......but size of hard drive = 0
and many features are hashed out including partitiions ?

Hmm, at a loss then. I suspect something about the new drive is causing some kind of compatibility issue. No way to tell unless you can connect it to another Amiga with a SCSI interface and/or a PC/MAC with SCSI to see if it behaves the same way
