the best c64 emulator?

Is there any really good c64 emulators for amiga out there? I've given away a bunch of floppies from my old friend the c64 to my girlfriend thinking that I just bring some new out using star commander... but i forgott i switched to win xp and got no dos mode to boot to.. so it doesnt work at all.

So i thought why not run an emulator on my amiga. Anyone got any suggestions?

Re: the best c64 emulator?

Frodo should work ( never tried ) - needs a lot of cpu power i think ( maybe it works well w/out sound )

With xp you can try ccs ( shareware ), (win)vice ( open source ) and frodo ( never tried ).

..i like to use my amiga couse it's just beside my bed, and i can use my tac 2:s. I've used winvice alot but i need something more relaxing than sitting at my desk playing at my pc.. Well, at least until i fixed my cable for emul1541 (being able to use the ami harddrive as a 1541 floppy to run games and programs) or managed to get hold of a computer to run starcommander and transfer all my d64:s over to floppy's again...

Yup. It's shareware. But I can't recall what it is that's non-working.

Btw I like your new title kodoichi. Why do you think you're labelled [cr]? And why aren't you [b]?

I like WinVice myself, seems to be very compatible and just screams on my system

I also like the feature that allows you to speed up the emulation speed, it's fun to tweak around with it and all

Frodo 2.4 runs ok on my 68030/50MHz. Not the greatest for fast action games maybe. The newer versions are a lot slower

Cool, ill check out frodo then...

Anyone used emul1541?`Sounds great just letting all your d64 files lie on the miggy harddrive and using it as a floppy drive. Was going to build the interface a year ago or so but did get the time to put it all together.

I think there are some vendors out there that actually make the X1541/1571 cable for PC and drive connections. I'm sure that on Aminet there are such plans/diagrams for the same kind of thing to connect an Amiga to such drives or you can also use a Catweasel card but this requires a big box Amiga

Emul 1541 uses a specific cable, the schematics is in its lha package on aminet.. so yeah. But its not a usual x1541 cable or something.. think it's specific for that software...

Last I'd heard/read in a couple of C64 forums there were supposed to be some XP related issues with CCS64. Whats worse there may or may not be another update. (Works fine on Win 9x machines, though the earlier dos versions had less crackly sound issues).

Re: Re: Re: the best c64 emulator?

I have xperience and ccs works without troubles, and the same for winvice ( i've never tried frodo ).
A friend of mine has told me they work also on 98.

Vice is multiplatform, there is also a linux version that is moreless the same of the windows one ( even if i've downloaded the debian archive and no fullscreen ( a quite common problem with linux emu's, maybe compiling it... ) )

WinVice seems to work for me on any of my Win 98 or Win XP boxes. Haven't tried out too many titles yet so there could be some compatibility issues that I've not come across yet

Well, the reason I asked was because he stated "with XP you can try", so I wondered why it wasn't simply "with Windows".

I figured as much too, but really the explaination should be Win32 as this would cover Win 9x/ME/NT/2K/XP et al

I am a C64 addict and for me the best emulator (compatibility and SPEED) on amiga is Magic64.

The last version is shareware but not really limited, available on Aminet
have fun.

Hmm.... the shareware version of Magic64 I tried (quite some time ago admittedly) was limited to something like 10 minutes of playing. That has been changed? Great

Although WinVice has better sound, (for music) I'd go for CCS64's speed everytime.

BTW-you could always check out the Lemon 64 board, last time I checked they'd had a no. of links to current '64 emulators.

Just checked out the current license agreement of MagiC64 and it's still the same: ten minutes of playing, then you have to pay. Even though I was quite impressed by its speed, I wouldn't recommend this emulator unless you're willing to pay or use illegal means.
