Games mostly but I also used it for Workbench (copying/formatting disks - that was painful with one drive!), Productivity software such as Final Copy... eventually got a Harddrive for Workbench related tasks... Think I had two external drives at one point back in the day.

I got one when I had an A500 to make working with the computer easier. (I had no, and could afford no hard drive). Also, like others here say, copying is easier and for games that used 2+ drives it was also a bonus.
