Bippy next time check the file before deleting it
it was a boot disk and not a sps file. (extension was .adf not .ipf) edit: I'd just like to state for anyone else who might be concerned about linking to SPS files, that these "sps fills" aren't actually sps files, they are all adfs that are needed for the sps games to work (bootdisks and savedisks etc). mass host downloads
As promised there are plenty of mass host downloads for the Games packs now. Find them in the sticky thread GameBase Amiga - Files and Torrents in this forum.

You're right I should've known it looked too good to be true.
But Savefile.com should be reliable (I had the old files on there for a long time) and convenient enough. |

Eh...
How can I understand this? Is MAGE something completely new, or does it make use of anything of the GameBase Amiga project too? Would make sense, I guess ... as the "original" project involved lots and lots of hard work. |

not only a new project, also some users painted their names green! Maybe mutations of Paul The Green Amiga Alien or new mods? Seems i missed their nominations...

secrecy, or lack thereof
The project is not that secret anymore. And leaking some information keeps people interested until we can actually present something to the public.

For real though... I think I have understood now (thanks eLowar). You do not want to get rid of the Gamebase Amiga data repository, but only get rid of the GameBase software itself. Well, I see, yet I've thought that at least the C64 version (Gamebase64) is a great piece of software, stable and whatnot. And Gamebase64 uses Gamebase SW too... Thus the only thing I do not (yet) understand is the need of a new frontend software at all. IOW what is it in Gamebase that you guys feel uncomfortable with? |

reasons for a new frontend
Actually GameBase is not that stable. It is fairly easy to crash, just look at the GameBase forums for several examples of reproducible errors (try scrolling through a long list with screenshots for a while for example). What's worse, a lot of these errors have been known for years (e.g. since 2003) and aren't fixed. Same goes for feature requests: more columns in the list view have been requested for years now too and nothing has happened. Problems with the image viewer have been known for a long time as well. Development has basically stopped since it went open source.

As eLowar says, it does have a bunch of problems as a frontend, there's a lot it does right and a lot it does wrong or doesn't do at all...Although I do think it's one of the best frontends currently around otherwise I would never have used it in the first place.
Then from the Amiga side of things, GB is VERY C64 orientated, although it can be customised to some degree it's not a very high degree, and just having programmer + musician fields may be enough for a C64 db, but what about developers or graphic artists etc? There's just no place for them to go. Also the screenshot windows are fixed at 320x200 which again is fine for C64 and even ST, but doesn't really do Amiga screens any justice. I'll stop listing problems with GameBase now as I don't want to put people off from using GameBase Amiga |

insightful... but if it can practically interface itself with the same exact files gamebase does, could it be open in the future to substitute it also on regards of other emulation programs? like a Mage64?

GameBase compatability
Maximum GameBase compatability (without compromising flexibility and new features) is a major goal of MAGE. While databases will not be immediately usable (MAGE will not be based on .mdb databases), there will be easy ways to import databases and scripts from GameBase.

Thanks for all explanations eLowar. I see clearer now. Although you're frequently on IRC, I do think these questions are of public interest and this thread might prevent you from having to repeat yourself all the time.
