PNG picture as background in WB 3.1

Is it possible to put a PNG picture file as your background in Workbench 3.1?

Yep, with OS3.9 and PNG datatype like WarpDT PNG or AkPNG but without a graphics card it'll take some time showing the picture I guess

You don't need OS3.9. Datatypes were introduced in WB 3.0. Just install a datatype for every kind of file you want to load and you can load those files into any program supporting datatypes. There are datatypes for almost any type of files, not only pictures. Have a look at http://www.aminet.net/search.php?path=util/dtype

I guess it's just WarpDT that needs the OS3.9 (OS3.5+?) picture datatype

It doesn't need OS3.9, I am quite sure I successfully installed all WarpDT datatypes on OS3.1. Just some features can only be used on OS3.9, like multi-image support in GIF and TIFF files. Actually even those can be used on OS 3.1, there is just no OS 3.1 program which knows about them. And of course true-colour output is not supported, all pictures are dithered to 256 or less colours.

How can I display a fast, clear (non-flickering) picture as a background under CWB 3.5 and only AGA that doesn't chew up most of my precious chip ram?

Sys:Prefs/WBPattern

With WBPattern you can choose both what picture you want as a background on your desktop and in windows

Install the datatype, select the picture in wbpattern!

You can test if the datatype works by trying to open .png with multiview...

It seems a little easier to use something like Personal Paint to 'Save As' the image as IFF...although you will lose some of the image quality.

to the fastest display save your background as iff, then try CyberbugfixAGA to save your precious chipram ; you can find it here : http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=16413

Don't know if this is much use to you but on the PC Paint Shop Pro will open and save .iff files
