2.5"ide > sata > ssd

bit cryptic I know but has anyone had any success with running a ssd drive via a 2.5" to sata converter, I have a 40gb ssd here gathering dust 4gb cf card seems small now

Should work fine. You will need an updated scsi.device to get over 8GB though.

thanks Jope for the confirmation, i was more worried about the drive being detected via the converter, i was planning on using psf3 as well as try my hand as os3.9 for the first time that should keep me off the streets for a bit

I didn't have much luck making this go, I had the ssd setup and booting os 3.9 but when it came to using it on my 1200 it just sat black screen with the hdd light lit solid then went to insert disk screen

@Prosonic

Interestingly I have done this recently - I did a small article on How to get 16GB mSATA SSD to 44pin IDE for the Amiga (and under £10 at the time) - have a click here

I have on my 3.9 A1200 an old OCZ Vertex2 of 60gb connected to the standard ide port using a 2.5 ide to sata adapter and it works just fine.

Sadly I thought I mentioned this earlier, but there are a few threads about SSD's on here.

There are a lot of cheap SATA to IDE adaptors / bridges that struggle to set up some sizes of SATA disk on PIO based IDE. Most I found struggled to set up 60GB SATA disk drives, one I had would only work with 40GB or less (this was tested on an XBox original and that claims to be UDMA66 )

All I can say is that your mileage will vary depending on what SATA->IDE bridge you use.

@dirkies

Have you tried larger SATA drives > 60GB using that adaptor on the Amiga. I found that this seems to be a hard-limit when connecting to a PIO mode 0 device. I tried an 80GB and 120GB with that type of adaptor and this couldn't be recognized by the Amiga, Xbox original or ZX Spectrum 8bit IDE. I should say that all these devices also were able to use a 120GB Samsung 2.5" IDE (which is quite amusing on a Spectrum +2A/B)

I will check if i have bigger old ssd 's here but 60GB should already be overkill for an Amiga so no disaster if it does not work at higher capacity

The largest Hard Disk I have managed to install on an Amiga was 300GB PATA IDE (on a FASTA ATA III) - eventually this ended up in the Xbox Original (Mashed fully loaded 4 players is the only reason! and maybe a couple of the Gauntlet series)

I have a 120 GB SSD (SATA) on my A4000 (OS 3.9 BB 1&2) with a SATA to 40 Pin IDE adapter. Just testing it to see if would be a viable replacement (SSD) for the IDE HD I have. I've ordered a 256 GB SSD drive to actually replace my 250 GB IDE drive.

The 120 GB SSD is running as slave to the IDE HD, partitioned, formatted, copied the System volume over and booted via the early boot menu to test. My primary goal is to reduce heat and power draw.

SSD's would cetainly reduce power requirements and subsequent heat build up both from the PSU and the device it's self, if you are still using optical devices, then possibly a move over to SFF (Small Form Factor) as these use less wattage.

If you get some time, I would love to see the set up, so share some pics too

That's actually my plan. I bought a 5.25" bracket that holds a slim optical drive and has a space for mounting a 3.5" drive. I have a CF card reader that I'm considering placing there. I have the 4-Way IDE device so it'd be SSD, DVD, CF reader on the IDE controller.

I'm still in the process of testing/configuring, and before I put it all together beyond the testing phase I plan on having my motherboard recapped. Probably won't have any photos before that

Let me add a correction to my setup. Did some testing and the A4000 will not cold-boot off the SSD drive, it doesn't see it until the system boots off the 3.1 ROMs and patches them with the OS 3.9 Rom updates loaded during the S:startup-sequence from the HD. Then I can re-boot using the two mouse button early boot menu to select the SSD drive as boot and disable the HD drive partitions. The HD is 250 GB and the SSD is 120 GB. I've replaced the 120 GB SSD with a 256 GB SSD with the same results.

A custom ROM may/should/probably allow for booting directly off the SSD as you could include the updated scsi.device inside it. The A4000 will require a ROMY to handle the larger Kickstart.

I need to pick up a CF card and try using that as the boot drive (4 GB CF card) and then have the 256 GB SSD as the additional partitions/storage when the system loads.

Okay, that worked. Booting off a 4 GB CF card and then accessing my SSD once the boot patches the kickstart and scsi.device.

Copying my HD over to the SSD drive now.....system "boot" partition of course already copied to the CF card.

Here's a quickie since I just got the CF Card and Slim DVD-RW mounted instead of just attached. Well, at least mounted in the drive tray.

Very nice indeed!

I have wanted one of these modules in my A2000 for a long time!

Thanks for sharing!
