Workbench 1.3. What files are copyright?
Hi.
I have workbench 1.3 so I don't need it. I was just wondering what files on it are copyright? What about the files in DEVS: if you were to copy those to a seperate disk and distribute it would that be infringe the copyright? Also the same question with the files in the C: dir. |

Well as all the files on the disk were written by Commodore engineers or licenced by Commodore for inclusion, the answer is pretty much everything.
I can't think of anything on he disk that isn't subject to copyright, but I may be mistaken. |

I would also say the whole disk and all content is copyrighted. Can't think of any file on the disks that would be not affected by the copyright.

Some of the fonts are copyrighted by Adobe iirc.

narrator.device, and translator.library (the text to speech synthesis) is owned by SoftVoice Inc. and they got into a disagreement with C= which is why it was excluded from WB2.0+

Add to the list FastFonts, owned by Charlie Heath/Microsmiths Inc and the Pipe Handler by Matt Dillon.
Making a copy for yourself is fine as that falls under the backup provisions stated in the 1.3 manual but strictly speaking distribution is a no-no. On the other hand plenty of individuals and companies have distributed files from the Workbench disks without permission even when Commodore was in business and they did nothing about it. |

many moons ago when A500s had 1.2 and the new kickstart was 1.3 there was arp, Amiga Replacement Project, but if i remember it only replace commands in ya C dir and save`d a bit of room on ya floppy disk.
as far as i can see at the moment an excelent project would be to do something like this so we can have a freely distributional WB. just found it on ami met and its called amiga DOS Resource Project (ARP) http://aminet.net/package/misc/antiq/ARP_13 Last edited by cosmicfrog; 29 July 2008 at 18:29. |

If you check eBay you will find a lot of EPROM Kickroms and other copied disks/cds too and nobody seems to care.

I think coding the device handlers and L: files would be the hardest for a Amiga Workbench replacement.
Awesome, just saw the aminet description of ARP library. I hope the files don't call arp.library. Last edited by redblade; 30 July 2008 at 10:18. Reason: late minute change |
