I recently dug my old 3000 desktop out of a box and set it up. It's pretty much original except it has 14 megs of fast ram or so... A couple questions:

1) VGA output shakes for a minute or two after start up and then stabilizes. I figure it's probably related to old capacitors. Anyone experienced this problem?

2) Is it possible to softkick a 3000? I've tried a variety of different programs from Aminet without any luck. Any details would be great.

Do you have a soft-booting ROM for the A3000? That would possibly explain why the soft-kicks don't work. Have a look in the DEVS: directory for a ROMS directory or something like that. You should be able to soft-boot by placing another ROM file in that directory and choosing from the startup menu.

1) it's normal for a flickerfixer of that vintage.. The one I have in my A2000 takes ages to warm up. (I don't have the Amber card, however)

2) It is possible, but you should have the kickstart in ROM before you softkick anything.

You can't just put any ROM file in DEVS: and have the 1.4 ROM load it in. The A3000 ROM images are superkickstart images - they have some extra code in them (along with a suitable scsi.device).

I seem to remember a tool that creates superkickstart images out of A3000 ROM images, if you really want to use the superkickstart functionality. (check Aminet)

If you're ever going to upgrade it with a CPU card, you'll need 3.1 ROMs there anyway - the 1.4 ROM only functions with the 030 on the motherboard.
